Positional Breakdown, Part-10: MLBs

Included is a detailed breakdown of the Mississippi State middle linebackers based on their 2009 play and how they looked and performed during the just-completed spring practices and scrimmages.

Mike Linebackers

Chris White (6'2 245) Senior

  • Scout Ranking:****
  • 2009 Stats:75 Tkls./4 TFL/0.5 Sks.
  • Spring Game: 5 Tkls./1 TFL

    Synopsis:
White came in from the junior college ranks and quickly established himself as the starting Will Linebacker. Coach Manny Diaz arrived and asked him to make the move back to his more natural Mike linebacker spot in the spring. White had a good spring and is looking to become a household name in 2010.

    Strengths:

  • Speed
  • Hard-Hitter
  • Durability
  • Strength
  • Production
  • Versatility

    Weaknesses:

  • Coverage Ability

    2010 Projection:
    85 to 90 Tkls./8 TFL/1 Sks./2 PB (2nd Team All-SEC)

White should become one of the top Mike Linebacker's in the SEC next season.

Jamie Jones (6'0 235) Redshirt Junior

  • Scout Ranking:***
  • 2009 Stats: 6 Tkls.
  • Spring Game: 8 Tkls.

    Synopsis:
Jones hasn't made much of an impact during his career. Coach Diaz came in with his more attacking style scheme and Jones light starting to come on in the spring. He capped the spring off by leading the team in tackles in the spring game.

    Strengths:

  • Athleticism
  • Coverage Ability
  • Good Range
  • Strength

    Weaknesses:

  • Not a Hard Hitter
  • Toughness
  • Awareness

    2010 Projection:
    36 Tkls./4 TFL/0 Sks.

Jones will likely be Chris Whites primary backup and also perform well as a special teams player.

Brandon Wilson (6'1 245) Redshirt Sophomore

  • Scout Ranking:
  • 2009 Stats: 5 Tkls.
  • Spring Game: 2 Tkls.

    Synopsis:
Wilson was Jamar Chaney's primary backup during the 2009 campaign, earning some spot duty. Wilson had a solid spring and is looking to get into the Mike linebacker rotation.

    Strengths:

  • Tackling
  • Awareness
  • Strength
  • Size

    Weaknesses:

  • Average Athleticism
  • Coverage Ability
  • Range

    2010 Projection:
    6 Tkls.

Wilson should get some playing time but true freshman Ferlando Bohanna will arrive in the fall and battle him for that playing time.

Ferlando Bohnanna (6'1 235) True Freshman

  • Scout Ranking:***
  • 2009 Stats: 88 Tkls./13 TFL/ 1 Sks./ 3 FF/ 1 FR

    Synopsis:
Bohanna is probably the first true downhill linebacker Mississippi State has recruited in years. He has the type of talent to come in and play right away and he will try to do that in the fall.

    Strengths:

  • Downhill LB- LB that comes straight at the opponent
  • Good Speed
  • Range
  • Recognition
  • It Factor

    Weaknesses:

  • Coverage Ability

    2010 Projection:
    10 Tkls./1 TFL/0 Sks.

Bohanna probably won't get a whole lot of playing time unless White or Jones are injured but I expect him to get his feet wet on special teams.
