Positional Breakdown, Part-15: Fullbacks

Included is a detailed breakdown of the Mississippi State fullbacks based on their 2009 play and how they looked and performed during the just-completed spring practices and scrimmages.

Patrick Hanrahan (5'11 235) Redshirt Senior

  • Spring Game: No Stats

    Synopsis:
    Hanrahan began his college career at Alabama but Nick Saban shifted the offense to a two tight end set leaving him without a position. He transferred to MSU in Coach Sylvester Croom's last season. He started at fullback in 2009 and helped Anthony Dixon rush for 1,300 plus yards. Hanrahan also was a valuable special teams player in 2009.

    Weaknesses:

  • Speed

    2010 Projection:
    Rush.- 10-35 yds.

    Hanrahan should be the starting fullback in 2010 and could see his role increased in the running game in short yardage situations.


    Sylvester Hemphill (5'9 215) Redshirt Junior

  • 2009 Stats: 3-5 yds.
  • Spring Game: No Stats

    Synopsis:
    Hemphill was Hanrahan's backup last season and played solid when given the opportunity.

    Weaknesses:

  • Lack of Versatility

    2010 Projection:
    Backup Fullback

    Hemphill should start out as Hanrahan's backup but could get beat out by William Shumpert.


    William Shumpert (5'9 243) Redshirt Freshman

  • 2009 Stats:Redshirt
  • Spring Game: No Stats

    Synopsis:
    Shumpert redshirted in 2009, failing to get in the proper condition to earn playing time. He did well on the scout team, showcasing his great run blocking ability. After getting in better shape during the off-season, he battled Hemphill for the backup job during spring practice.

    2010 Projection:
    8-40 yds.

    Shumpert should eventually become Hanrahan's backup and could help expand the role of the fullback position in the spread offense.
