The newest members of the Bulldog roster reportedly on campus today are: DL Kaleb Eulls, QB Dylan Favre, RB Nick Griffin, ATH Brandon Hill, ATH Jay Hughes, WR Malcolm Johnson, ATH Jameon Lewis, DL Curtis Virges, and ATH Matthew Wells. These nine may still be joined by other incoming freshmen who clear the normal hurdles for college eligibility, with Thursday the final day for June semester enrollment.
While they cannot receive actual football 'coaching' during the summer, all the rookies are making the immediate acquaintance of strength Coach Matt Balis. Which, Mullen would say, is just the sort of coaching new kids can make the best use of to begin their college careers.
This is the biggest bunch of true freshmen yet to come to Mississippi State for the first summer semester, aided by the '10 fact that school did not start until June 1 and thus allowed most high schools to complete their own spring semesters. And, by extension, the players to officially graduate as required by the NCAA's Clearinghouse. Also, the players and their high schools were able to provide the Clearinghouse all necessary materials and expedite the clearing process.
Last year State was able to welcome five true frosh to campus for the June '09 semester. Some played, the rest redshirted, but all got a head-start on college life and coursework that eases the long-term process for eligibility and ultimate graduation.
Eight of the nine enrollees are Mississippi natives and the lone ‘import', Johnson, is a Tuscaloosa native.
These new rookies join a trio of '10 recruits already on campus this past spring: juco RB Vick Ballard and DT James Carmon, and freshman OL Blaine Clausell.
Among those anticipated to beat the deadline are DB Jamerson Love, DB Chris Hughes, and LB Ferlando Bohanna.
