Jonathan Holder Commits to MSU

One of the premiere baseball players in Mississippi, Gulfport High School's Jonathan Holder (6-3, 215), has committed to Mississippi State.

"I committed to Mississippi State today," said Holder, who hit .429 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI this past season for GHS. "I called (MSU head) Coach (John) Cohen and told him. He was excited about it. He said we have a long road to go but we are going to do it together and get it done. And we are going to have a big-time program."

The senior-to-be talked in detail about why he chose Mississippi State over offers from Southern Miss, Southeast Louisiana, South Alabama and recruiting interest from Tennessee, Ole Miss and Samford.

"There were really two main reasons I committed to State," said Holder. "Number 1, I really like the coaches there and the atmosphere is great. I knew the second I saw it it was where I wanted to be. But I wanted to hold off just to make sure. Number 2, they showed me that they wanted me there as much as I wanted to be there. That meant a lot to me."

Gulfport High School head baseball coach Tim Dowdy talked about Holder's strengths as a baseball player.

"Jonathan is a guy who can play both (in the field and on the mound) on the next level," he said. "He is a big, strong kid who hits for power and has a power arm on the mound. In addition to his fastball, which is in the 87-88 range and tops out at 90 to 91, he has a big-time curveball. He just turned 17-years-old last month, so his best baseball is in front of him."

Jonathan Holder is Mississippi State's fifth commitment of the 2011 graduating class. The others are Phillip Casey, a 6-1, 170 SS who plays for Clements High School in Sugar Land, TX, Brandon Woodruff, a 6-4, 215 OF/RHP from Wheeler (MS) High School, Trevor Fitts, a 6-2, 190-pound RHP from Pelham (AL) High School, and Jacob Lindgren, a 6-0, 180 LHP/OF who plays for St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, MS.
