Game Week Team Preview: Missouri Tigers

A closer look at the Missouri Tigers heading into this week's game against McNeese State

Saturday evening, the Missouri Tigers (1-0) will play host to McNeese State (1-0) in the Tigers' home opener (6:00 P.M., PPV TV [FSN]). Missouri is coming off of a 23-13 come-from-behind win over Illinois in their season opener.

Don't expect the Tigers to overlook McNeese State. To a man, Missouri players on Monday expressed nothing but respect for the Cowboys. They're all aware that McNeese State is no run-of-the-mill FCS team, and that their roster is populated with quality athletes. Coach Pinkel had this to say about Saturday's game against McNeese State.

"We're looking forward to playing in the ZOU and looking forward to playing in front of our fans," said Coach Pinkel. "Hopefully, we're trying to become a better football team. We have great respect for McNeese State. It would not be wise to not prepare properly for this game. It also reflects a lot about your football team. This is as important as any game on our schedule."

The Tigers will be looking to improve in just about every aspect of their game. Every player we spoke to on Monday echoed Coach Pinkel's sentiments. They just want to keep getting better.

Heading into this week's game, this year's senior class has been on hand for 31 wins since their arrival in 2007. Last year's graduating seniors hold the school record of 38 wins, eclipsing the 2008 graduating class, who posted 37 wins over their four-year careers. A 9-win season would make this 2010 senior class the winningest in school history.

Gary Pinkel enters this week's game with a 68-46 record at Missouri, good for third-place on Missouri's career wins list. Coach Pinkel's teams have averaged more than 9 wins/season over the past five years, and if the Tigers can sustain that 9 win/season average over the next four years, Coach Pinkel will have become the winningest coach in school history.

Missouri kickers, beginning in 2005 with Adam Crosset, and continuing with Jeff Wolfert and Grant Ressel, have converted on 239 consecutive PATs. The NCAA record for consecutive PATs made is 262, held by Syracuse.

Aldon Smith registered 10 tackles, including 3 TFLs, and 2 QB sacks against Illinois, and was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.

One thing I look for in this game is for the Tigers to work on their running game. It looks like McNeese State defends the run pretty well, but if the Tigers are able to run at all, it should really open up the passing game. Of course, Missouri will open with their passing game, and then try to run off of that.

When you're scratching your head over some of the play calls, remember that certain plays are used to set up others. An example of this is the Michael Egnew TD catch, which was set up by numerous screen passes, some of which weren't very effective at the time, but when you consider them as part of a package, or strategy, they proved to be very effective.

I expect the Tigers to be very successful defensively. I think McNeese State will have trouble with Missouri's defensive front. The Tigers will probably continue to create turn overs.

I'm especially looking forward to seeing Marcus Murphy take the field. He and Henry Josey are exciting young ball carriers. Murphy's slated to return kicks on Saturday. I want to see what the freshmen TBs can do in the backfield, as well. I expect to see James Franklin get his first action in the black and gold. That's exciting, too. I think Franklin's going to be very special.

For those attending the game, don't miss the B2 fly over. Look south a little before 6:00 P.M.. You won't hear the Stealth until it's over head.
