Tigers Pull A Win Out Late 27-24

Tigers manage to come away with a victory over the Aztecs in the final minutes

On Saturday evening, the #25 Missouri Tigers (3-0) scored a 27-24 win over the San Diego Aztecs (2-1). For 58 minutes and 38 seconds, this one was on Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert had engineered an embarrassing, frustrating, and program defining loss with a pathetic performance against the Aztecs. Then, in the game's final minute, T.J. Moe came to the rescue, and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. On Missouri's second play in their two-minute offense, after taking over on their own 12 yard line with 1:22 left on the clock, Moe, who ended up with 7 catches for 119 yards, took a Gabbert pass near Missouri's 32 yard line, out along the left sideline. He made the first guy miss, picked up a block from Jerrell Jackson, and raced down the left sideline into the end zone to put Missouri ahead with 51 seconds remaining in the game.

After the game, senior center Tim Barnes said, "We kept believing."

Blaine Gabbert's postgame comments were very insightful, and demonstrated some real leadership by the junior QB.

"The guys stuck with me, and T.J. Moe saved the day." said Gabbert. "The ball wasn't coming out (of my hand) the way it usually does. Bad day. I had to fight through that. It was a total team effort. The defense stepped up. Collectively, as an offense, we stuck it out and ended up winning the football game. That's all that matters. I don't really care how bad or how good I throw, as long as we get the W................. It was fun. We all had to compete throughout the entire game. That's what we've been preaching all along. We have to compete until the last second ticks off the clock. It was just a great team effort. It really showed our guts, again. We're 3-0, and that's all that matters."

Credit San Diego State. They were as good as Gary Pinkel had said. The Aztecs' freshman RB, Ronnie Hillman, looked like the second coming of Marshall Faulk, as he rushed for 228 yards and 2 TDs on 23 carries, including a 93 yarder that had given San Diego State the lead.

Credit Missouri's defense, which kept the Tigers in the game, and held San Diego State to less than half of their scoring average. The Tigers held San Diego State to 6-18 third-down conversions (33%). Afterwards, Coach Pinkel credited his defense.

"We played some great defense," said Coach Pinkel. "You take away those two big plays.................. "

Credit Michael Egnew, who had 13 receptions for 145 yards, to lead Missouri in both categories, and moved the chains for Missouri all night.

Credit the guts that Gabbert talked about.
