Game Week Team Preview: Missouri Tigers

A closer look at the Tigers as they prepare to face off agasint the MAC's Miami, (OH) Red Hawks

On Saturday afternoon (1:00 P.M., No TV), the #24 Missouri Tigers (3-0) play host to the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (2-1).

Missouri retained its undefeated record, and its national ranking, with a memorable come-from-behind 27-24 win last Saturday over San Diego State.

The Tigers will be without the services of starting DE Aldon Smith, but may get a couple of defensive starters back for Miami (OH). Luke Lambert is listed as a starter for this week, and Jasper Simmons may be cleared to return to action this week, as well.

For Missouri, this is a match-up that favors the Tigers in almost every aspect of the game. Earlier this week, Redhawks' Head Coach Michael Haywood talked about the Missouri Tigers.

"They (Missouri) are a good football team," said Coach Haywood. "You can tell by the talent that they have, that they have done a tremendous job of recruiting."

Coach Pinkel didn't have much to say about Miami (OH), but expressed great respect for them and for the league (MAC) in which they play. He did say that he knows for sure that players in that league relish the opportunity to play against a BCS school, and that they will be psyched up and prepared to play. He talked about preparing for the Redhawks.

"I think they're (Miami) playing very well," said Coach Pinkel. "Their QB is playing well. I think they're playing very good defense. We're just focusing on them, and their schemes, and trying to come up with a good game plan."

"(The MAC) is a great league," asserted Coach Pinkel. "A league that has upsets every year. They enjoy going and playing in BCS stadiums. They're a much improved football team. And, it's obvious that we've got a lot of work to do also. I always talk about our opponent, but it's still about us trying to get better. And, we've got a lot of things to improve on."

Offensively, Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert's 284 passing yds./game ranks 13th nationally, and receivers T.J. Moe (10) and Michael Egnew (9.67) rank 3rd and 4th in the NCAA respectively in receptions per game.

"They (Missouri) attack your coverages," said Coach Haywood, talking about Missouri's passing game. "They do a nice job of combination routes, and attacking the coverages that you play. And, the QB does a nice job of reading."

Devion Moore leads the Tigers with 28 carries, but Henry Josey leads the team with 158 yards rushing. Josey's 8.8 yds./carry average leads the Tigers in this category, compared to Moore's 5.1 yds./carry.

Coach Pinkel emphasized that he and his staff count the bubble screen that Missouri runs as a running play, saying that it acts as a toss sweep. Including the bubble screens as running plays means that the Tigers have a 54%-46% pass to run ratio so far this season.

"But I still think that we have to just run-run the ball better," said Coach Pinkel, "And, a little bit more than what we've been doing it."

In addressing his team's preparation for this week's game against Miami (OH), Coach Pinkel continued to emphasize to his team that they need to focus on just getting better each week.
