Post-Game Look At The Tigers 30-9 Win

Recap of the Missouri Tigers big road victory against the Texas A&M Aggies down at Gollege Station

On Saturday at Kyle Field, the #21/#19 Missouri Tigers (6-0,2-0) improved their record to 6-0 for only the 5th time in school history, with a 30-9 win over the Texas A&M Aggies (3-3, 0-2). Missouri Head Coach Gary Pinkel talked about the win.

"I was really proud of our team," said Coach Pinkel. "What I said to our team after the game was, 'When we play as a team, and as a unit.' I don't know how many superstars we have. We probably don't have a lot of superstars on this team. But, we've got a lot of good players, though. 'When we play as a unit, offense and defense, and we're accountable to one another, we're a pretty good football team.' I think the good thing that I feel about it right now is that I think we're getting better. I think that's as important as anything. We're really improving. We're a lot better football team than we were three weeks ago."

Missouri took a 16-0 lead to the locker room at halftime that could easily have been 21-0. The Missouri defense surrendered just 98 total yards to A&M in the first half, as Coach Steckel dialed up a variety of blitzes, and the Missouri secondary was terrific in coverage, as they were often singled up against A&M's receivers.

The Missouri offense got untracked on the Tigers' third possession, midway through the first quarter, and was functioning very well, until the last few seconds of the half, when an official review negated Wes Kemp's second TD of the half, and instead, set up a Missouri second and goal from the one yard line. Blaine Gabbert went under center, but failed to handle the QB center exchange. After a third down running play went backwards, the Tigers settled for a field goal to close out the first half scoring.

Texas A&M opened the second half by pounding the football on the ground, and initially, that proved effective, but Missouri quickly adjusted, and forced A&M to punt. The Aggies finally got on the board, with a field goal, late in the third quarter, but the Tigers came right back with a touchdown, and stretched the lead to 30-3, early in the fourth quarter.

Blaine Gabbert completed 31 of 47 pass attempts (66%), for 361 yards and 3 TDs. Wes Kemp had a career day, with 10 receptions for 89 yards and 2 TDs. Gabbert spread the ball around, as Michael Egnew made 10 catches for 87 yards, and T.J. Moe finished the game with 6 receptions for 110 yards and 1 TD. Jerrell Jackson had 4 receptions for 55 yards, and Brandon Gerau had 1 reception, a tough catch over the middle for 20 yards, that netted a first down.

The Missouri running game was effective enough, especially in the second and third quarters, although the numbers are a little misleading, as the Tigers finsihed with just 56 yards rushing on 25 carries (2.2 yards/carry). Kendial Lawrence led the Tigers in rushing, with 44 yards and 1 TD on 11 carries (4 yards/carry), and Henry Josey rushed for 29 yards on 5 carries (5.8 yards/carry).

Brad Madison garnered three QB sacks on the day, as the Tigers pressured Jarrod Johnson all day, rendering him relatively innefective. The Missouri defense finished the day with 7 QB sacks, and held A&M to 379 yards of total offense on the day. A&M netted only 57 yards rushing, on 33 carries (1.7 yards/carry). Johnson finished the game with 27 completions out of 48 pass attempts (56%) for 322 yards, but was just 15 of 31 for 141 yards entering the fourth quarter. A&M racked up considerable yardage, and their lone touchdown, in the fourth quarter, after the outcome of the game had been decided. Coach Pinkel talked about his defense.

"They're playing so well as a unit together," said Coach Pinkel. "We just want to keep getting better. I think we're doing a real good job. Our kids are real focused. It's kind of neat to see them. They feel good about themselves, but they also are taking kind of a business like approach."

"(In the) fourth quarter, we didn't finish quite like, on either side of the ball, that I wanted to," continued Coach Pinkel. "You know, we got that big lead, and you got to be able to do the right things in the fourth quarter. There's always things to improve on. But, it was a real big win for our program."
