Post-Game Look At Mizzou Win Over OU

The Missouri Tigers move to a perfect 7-0 with their big victory over the Oklahoma Sooners

At game's end on Saturday night, as the Missouri student body streamed onto Faurot Field, Gary Pinkel had registered the biggest win of his head coaching career. His #11 Missouri Tigers (7-0, 3-0) had finally beaten the #1 Oklahoma Sooners (6-1, 2-1), pulling away in the 4th quarter, and earning a hard-fought win by the final score of 36-27. Afterwards, Coach Pinkel talked about the victory.

"It's huge! Obviously, it's huge," said Coach Pinkel, smiling. "It's a long time coming. It was not easy. I'm just real proud of our team. It was a great, great win."

Missouri's Gahn McGaffie electrified an already pumped-up homecoming crowd when he returned the game's opening kick-off 86 yards for a TD to stake the Tigers to a 7-0 lead. Then, Oklahoma was forced to punt on their first possession, but Carl Gettis muffed the punt off of the foot of the Sooners' left-footed punter, and Oklahoma recovered the football on Missouri's 45-yard line. Four plays later, Landry Jones found Kenny Stills running loose down the right side to tie the score.

Oklahoma drove downfield again, but Missouri came up with a couple of turnovers. First, Aldon Smith dropped into the flat, and picked off a pass, and returned it 58 yards to the Oklahoma 28-yard line. Six plays later, De'Vion Moore punched it in to give Missouri the lead at 14-7. A lttle later, Mossis Madu fumbled, and Jasper Simmons pounced on the ball at Missouri's 14-yard line to end an Oklahoma scoring threat.

But, Oklahoma came back, and DeMarco Murray took a swing pass into the end zone to knot the score at 14. Missouri drove right back down the field, then stalled in the red zone, before Grant Ressel kicked a 36-yard FG, on the final play of the first half, to put Missouri ahead 17-14 heading into the locker room.

Oklahoma went three and out following the opening kick-off of the second half, but Sooners' safety Jonathon Nelson stripped the ball from Missouri's Michael Egnew following a reception over the middle, and Oklahoma took possession on Missouri's 28-yard line. The Tigers' defense stiffened, and Oklahoma missed the FG.

The Tigers' drove down, and Grant Ressel made a 30-yard FG, to extend Missouri's lead to 20-14, with 5:30 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Oklahoma drove right back down the field, and Jones hit TE James Hanna in the end zone to put the Sooners up 21-20, with 2:48 left in the 3rd quarter.

After the two teams traded punts, Gabbert found Jerrell Jackson down the right seam, and Jackson bounced off of the tackle, and strolled into the end zone to put Missouri back on top 26-21 with 12:43 to go in the game. Missouri went for two, but Gabbert botched the hand-off.

Jacquies Smith tipped a Landry Jones' pass, and Zaviar Gooden came up with the interception to put the Tigers in Oklahoma territory. Michael Egnew pulled in Gabbert's short pass in the flat, and lateralled the ball to Kendial Lawrence, who stepped out at the Oklahoma 1-yard line. The Sooners' defense stiffened, and Ressel kicked a 23-yard FG, to extend Missouri's lead to 29-21, with 9:44 remaining in the game.

Once again, Missouri forced the Sooners to punt, and Gabbert and the Tigers took over on their own 24, with 8:53 remaining. Missouri drove down to the Sooners' 3-yard line, where "Big James" Franklin powered his way into the end zone to put Missouri ahead 36-21 with 3:46 remaining.

Madu mishandled the ensuing kick-off, then returned it to the Missouri 15-yard line. Two Missouri penalties put Oklahoma on the 2-yard line, with a first and goal. Trey Millard punched it in to cut Missouri's lead to 36-27 with 6:06 to go in the game. The Sooners two-point pass attempt fell incomplete.

Then, Missouri ran the football, and the clock, and the Tiger defense held on for the win.

Blaine Gabbert played great, and finished with 30 completions on 42 pass attempts, for 308 yards, and 1 TD. His favorite target on the night was Jerrell Jackson, who had 9 receptions for 139 yards and 1 TD. After the game, the Missouri QB expressed his thoughts about the win.

"We've worked hard for this and all we had to do is believe," said Gabbert.

Missouri ran the football for 178 yards on 39 carries (4.6 yards/carry) to Oklahoma's 99 yards rushing on 25 carries (4 yards/carry). De'Vion Moore led the way with 73 yards rushing on 10 carries, and Henry Josey added 64 yards on 14 carries.

On this historic night, Missouri outplayed Oklahoma, and then everyone celebrated.
