Gettis Ready To Turn The Page

Tiger cornerback Carl Gettis discusses moving on after disappointing loss and looking ahead to TT

On Monday, ShowMeMizzou visited with Missouri senior starting CB Carl Gettis, and he talked about the disappointment of the loss at Nebraska, and about turning the page.

"It was a tough loss," said Gettis. "Nebraska, they came out ready to play. We spotted them 24 points in the first quarter. We didn't come out ready to play. They did. You know, we were trying to play catch up the whole game. It was tough on our offense, trying to catch up against a good defense like that. It was a disappointing loss. But, there's nothing that we can do about it now. We just have to focus on the next game."

Gettis talked about the team's preparedness heading into the Nebraska game, and his role in the defensive miscues.

"I think you could look at the first quarter," admitted Gettis, "and just tell, that we didn't come in as prepared as we needed to be to play that game. We gave up about 153 yards in the first quarter, I believe, rushing, to Helu. I think that first quarter pretty much showed that we weren't ready to play. After that, we focused up, and got ready to play."

"It was probably just a mindset," Gettis offered, as an explanation of what was missing at the beginning of the game. "It was probably emotional. When you've got your mind right, emotionally, everything else just comes along, physically."

"On the first play, Helu's long touchdown run," said Gettis. "I was playing the safety position. I'm the last line of defense. It's my job to make that play. I let my team down. I didn't make the play. I took a bad angle. On the post route, I let him get in my blind spot. He ran a good route. I knew the route was coming. I just didn't react quickly enough. It was a breakdown, a letdown on my part, which hurt my team."

I asked Carl about his role as a team leader in getting the team to turn the page.

"I think I've just got to show it through my actions," explained Gettis. "I've got to come in intense, enthusiastic, ready to play, and ready to practice. I've got to come in Tuesday, you know, I can't have my head hanging low in disappointment. Because this is a new week. You know, we're playing a new team. We've got a great opportunity ahead of us, still."

"We have great team chemistry," replied Gettis, in response to my question about the team's make-up. "There is something special about this team. We're close, like a family. Everybody loves each other. We're out here, we're all on one mission. We all see one goal ahead. We're all out here, fighting together, just to reach that one goal."
