Post-Game Look At Mizzou Shutout Over ISU

The Tigers went into Ames and came away with some school records with their 14-0 blanking of Iowa State

On Saturday evening in Ames, the #15 Missouri Tigers (9-2, 5-2) defeated the Iowa State Cyclones (5-7, 3-5) by the final score of 14-0.

This was the second shutout of the year for the Tigers, as Missouri's current senior class became the winningest in the school's history, with their 39th win over the past four years. That eclipses the previous mark, which was set by last year's seniors. The 3rd winningest senior class in school history is the 2008 senior class, making it three straight season in which that record has been re-established. Coach Pinkel talked about the win, and about his team.

"I'm very proud of our team, how we competed," said Coach Pinkel. "We really battled. It started with our defense. We did some good things on offense, but we've just got to execute better, at times."

After Blaine Gabbert found Michael Egnew in the back right corner of the end zone to put Missouri ahead 7-0, Carl Gettis came up and stopped Iowa State RB Alexander Robinson for no gain, on 4th and 1 near midfield, to close out the first quarter.

Neither team was able to sustain enough offense in the 2nd quarter to dent the scoreboard, and Missouri took that 7-0 lead to the locker room. Coach Rhoads appeared to be content just to hang around, not wanting to risk putting the ball up with his young QB.

For Missouri, their offense was experiencing the varied miscues in execution with which we've become all too familiar. Penalties, missed blocks, dropped passes, and missed reads and throws were as responsible for stopping the Tigers as were the Cyclones.

Midway through the 3rd quarter, Iowa State took over on their own 5-yard line following a great punt from near midfield by Matt Grabner, and proceeded to march down the field, only to miss their second FGA of the evening.

Missouri took over, and began a drive that extended into the 4th quarter, and that included a fake punt conversion by Grabner, and that culminated with a De'Vion Moore TD run from inside the 1-yard line, that put Missouri ahead 14-0 early in the 4th quarter.

Iowa State drove across midfield, but Brad Madison knocked the ball loose from the Cyclone's QB Jerome Tiller, and Missouri recovered. Following the Missouri punt, the Cyclones converted a fake punt of their own from their own end of the field, and drove into Missouri territory, but the Tigers held, and took over on downs.

Egnew allowed a certain first down reception to sail right through his hands, on 3rd and seven, and Missouri had to punt again. Iowa State took over on their own 13-yard line, trailing 14-0, with 5:04 remaining in the game, and went into a hurry-up two-minute type offense. But, the Missouri defense finished strong, and Iowa State never threatened to score.

On the night, Missouri ran the football for 132 yards, and Gabbert completed 16 of 26 pass attempts (62%) for 172 yards (10.8 yards/completion) and a TD. Egnew finished with 7 catches for 77 yards, and 1 TD.

"They're a great group of kids," Coach Pinkel continued, talking about his team. "We're just trying to keep getting better and better."
