This past Saturday almost 150 prospects from across Missouri, Illinois and Kansas participated in the most recent Show-Me Combine held in St. Louis, Mo.
Players from the classes of 2016 through 2012 turned out and put their best efforts forward testing their athletic abilities in the forty, vertical jump, broad jump, agility shuttles and bench press, as well as in 1 on 1's.
While many players stood out on the day, one player who excelled in all areas was Kansas City (MO) Staley running back Morgan Steward 5'11" 188lbs.
Steward posted the fastest 40 time on the day with a 4.45, and also tied for the top vertical with 37 inches, posted among the top shuttle times and lifted 185lbs 20 times in the bench press.
While he is a standout running back, Morgan decided to test himself and his abilities by playing the unfamiliar position of cornerback in the one on ones. His thought being that he was willing to do what ever was necessary to succeed on the college level, and being able to play cornerback as well as running back would only help in his goal of playing D1 football.
Despite never having played the position, Steward excelled at it, using his speed, agility and overall athleticism to make up for lack of experience.
During the drills he was able to cover receivers, break up passes and use his speed to cover any mistakes he made from the position being new to him.
Of course, Steward was still on a high from receiving recent verbal offers from Missouri and Northern Illinois on Friday.
While Morgan Steward one the fastest man award on the day with his 4.45 forty time, he wasn't the only speedster at the combine.
Rockhurst 2012 RB Jordan Walker 5'11" 190 excited those in attendance with his 4.46 forty time which held as the fastest on the day until the very last forty run by Steward.
Walker blazed down the track exciting the timers with his speed. Jordan also excelled in other testing showing his quickness.
One area that Walker impressed me was with his pass catching ability and work in the 1 on 1's. Walker had the ability to blow by linebackers and DB's on deep routes and showed very good hands snagging passes.
Other prospects who showed their speed on the day included Parkway North LB Donavin Newsom who ran a 4.5 on his first try, 2013 RB Jonathan Parker 5'9" 180 CBC 4.5 forty- 2013 LB Brandon Minor 6'2" 225 Chaminade 4.6 forty, 2012 RB Tion Blair 6'1" 195 Normandy 4.6 forty, 2012 WR Stefan Sansone 6'0" 175 4.6 forty, Riverview Gardens 2013 WR Corey Winfield 6'0" 170 4.6 forty and Quarterbacks Dalton Demos 6'4' 200 CBC 2012 who ran a 4.7 along with 2013 Kansas City (MO) Staley QB Trent Hosick 6'2" 205 who also ran a 4.7 on the day.
2016 WR Faizol Bouchard 5'6" 140 turned in a 4.7 as well.
Warrenton LB Austin Black 6'0" 230lbs put on a display of strength that was very impressive on the day. Black cranked out 21 reps of 225lbs on the day to take the strongest man award.
Black also showed good athleticism in agility drills to go with his 4.8 forty time on the day.
Windsor DT Alec Fister 6'2" 302lbs also showed off his strength with 17 reps of 225lbs
Here is a quick rundown of some of the other standout on the day by position. An in-depth look at the offensive and defensive standouts will be coming soon.
MICDS QB Thomas Militello 6'4" 190 had to leave early for a basketball game, but he threw the ball during warm-ups and continues to impress me with his strong arm.
Kansas City (MO) Rockhurst's Nick Jones 6'3" 190lbs had to wait his turn playing behind senior Frank Arbanas last year, but Jones may be the best quarterback not to have started in 2010. He has a great arm, accuracy and footwork to go along with solid athleticism
Class of 2013- Grandview (MO) QB Ryan Lee 6'3" 180 was very impressive with his arm. He has good size and athleticism. Also, QB Trent Hosick Kansas City (MO) Staley. DeSmet QB Connor Harrison.
Besides the speedy trip of Morgan Steward, Jordan Walker and Jonathan Parker-several other backs had good days.
Parkway Central standout Brandon Sheperd 6'2" 185 stood out at both receiver and defensive back. Sheperd would prefer to play WR in college.
