On Thursday afternoon, the Missouri Tigers closed out the early portion of spring practice with a half-scrimmage inside the Devine Pavilion. The team will head off on spring break, before returning to resume spring ball. Coach Pinkel indicated that when spring ball resumes, that several of the players who have been sitting out due to injuries, will be able to get back onto the field. Among those expected to return to action in less than two weeks is Dominique Hamilton.
There were two new injuries incurred during Thursday's scrimmage. Rolandis Woodland and Xavier Smith each suffered ankle sprains, and left the field with the training staff. Luke Lambert, Will Ebner, and Donovan Bonner continued to sit out, as did Elvis Fisher, Derrion Thomas, Kyle Peasel, and Kerwin Stricker. Hamilton, Marcus Malbrough, and Corey Sudhoff each wore red pull-overs, and went through some non-contact drills, as did Beau Brinkley, and Steven Drain. Drain was doing some of the long-snapping.
"It was a very spirited practice," said Coach Pinkel. "It was good. I thought the snaps were better, which allowed the QBs to do better. Otherwise, it was very competitive. It came down to a tie, and the tie-breaker was the 47-yard field goal. It was a good way to put some pressure on Grant (Ressel), and he came through."
During the 1-on-1 pass-rush drills, Travis Ruth picked up a win over Jimmy Burge. Jayson Palmgren stone-walled Marvin Foster. Brad Madison used an outside-to-inside move to blow past Jack Meiners. Kony Ealy broke out a spin move to pick up a win over Chris Freeman. Hadn't seen that before. Brayden Burnett blew right past Anthony Gatti. Mark Hill stopped Brendan Donaldson. Foster bull-rushed Justin Britt, to pick up a win. Nick Demien prevailed in a closely contested battle over Gerrand Johnson.
The scrimmage began with Ashton Glaser running the second-team offense against the number one defense. Glaser hit Brandon Gerau on an inside screen. Andrew Wilson was right there to lay a big hit on Gerau, and Terrell Resonno quickly cleaned it up. Wilson and Marvin Foster chased Glaser out of the pocket, where he unloaded the ball out of bounds. Glaser hit Henry Josey with a swing pass out in the left flat. Josey followed his blocks, and picked up a first down. Glaser found Marcus Lucas down along the left sideline for a first down. Tavon Bolden was there to push him out of bounds. Robert Steeples blitzed out of his nickel-back spot, and sacked Glaser. Brad Madison dropped back into the zone near the left seam, and intercepted Glaser's pass. Terrell Resonno broke through, and got into Glaser's face, forcing him to unload the ball out of bounds. Marcus Murphy took a swing pass from Glaser, out in the right flat, and broke it up

De'Vion Moore took an inside hand-off, and went around the left side for about 6 yards. E.J. Gaines was in on the stop. Franklin did a nice job of leading Moore, with a swing pass out in the right flat, but Gaines came up quickly, and blew it up with a big hit. Austin Wuebbels made a nice block that sprang Moore on an inside hand-off. Moore made some people miss, and worked his way around the right side for a big gain. Kendial Lawrence took an inside hand-off from Franklin, and took it around the right side, cut it back inside, and took it to the house. Franklin found Wes Kemp on the bubble screen, and Kemp picked up about 5 yards.
Franklin hit L'Damian Washington for a first down, out along the right sideline. Nice catch! Lawrence took an inside hand-off around the right side for about 5 yards. Franklin completed a very well thrown ball to T.J. Moe for a first down. Franklin threw the football from the right hash all of the way to the left sideline, and put it on the money, and on a line.
Tyler Gabbert brought the number three offense out, and went against the number three defense. Gabbert was swarmed under by Matt Hoch and Brayden Burnett, immediately after taking the snap. Gabbert hit Gahn McGaffie on a slip screen, out near the right hash. McGaffie turned it up for a nice gain. Gabbert found Eric Waters sitting down near the left hash, for about 6 yards. Jared Culver took an inside hand-off around the right side, but was out run to the sideline by Brayden Burnett and Daniel Easterly, who ran him out of bounds for little or no gain. Matt Hoch sacked Gabbert. Gabbert hit Greg White with a swing pass, out in the left flat, for a big gain. White made some people miss, and ran through some arm tackles, for about 25 yards. White took an inside hand-off from Gabbert, and picked up about 5 yards.
Gabbert hit Jimmie Hunt out along the left sideline, near the first down marker. Daniel Carpenter and Mario Adzoh ran Hunt out of bounds. Gabbert hit Bud Sasser with a quick pass, out near the left seam. Adzoh was there to bring him down after a short gain. White took a swing pass from Gabbert, and ran over Carpenter, on his way to a first down.
Gabbert ran the first-team offense against the starting defense. Gabbert scrambled out to the right, under pressure from Jacquies Smith, and found T.J. Moe out along the right sideline, for the first down, in front of Trey Hobson. Brad Madison tackled Lawrence behind the line of scrimmage. Gabbert got it to Egnew, on a slip screen. Egnew showed some quality run-after-catch, for a first down, and then some. Gabbert faked a hand-off, and started up field. Zaviar Gooden stopped him for no gain. Gabbert completed a nicely-timed swing pass to Moore, out in the right flat. Moore turned it up for about 8 yards. Henry Josey took a pitch from Gabbert, and got the edge, picking up a first down, before he was run out of bounds by Ealy, Ruise, and others. Gabbert hit Egnew on a crossing route, and Kip Edwards was there to make the stop.
Franklin found McGaffie, for a completion, out in the right seam, in front of Ruise, for about 5 yards. Randy Ponder blitzed off of the edge, forcing Franklin to scramble up the middle, where he was brought down near the line of scrimmage. Franklin got the ball to Sasser, out in the right seam. Sasser ran through a big hit by Gaines, and picked up a couple of more yards. Nice run-after-catch! Franklin found Washington on a slant, right in front of Tristen Holt, who immediately made the tackle. Facing third and four, Franklin dropped back, and went through his progressions, finding his third receiver, in Jimmie Hunt, for a first down, out along the left side. Ruise and Holt were among those who ran Hunt out of bounds. Franklin kept it, and picked up about 6 yards, on first down. Franklin found Jaleel Clark out in the left seam, to move the chains. Franklin faked the hand-off to Murphy, and picked up the first down. Then Franklinhanded it to Murphy, who skirted the left side, before he was run out of bounds at the one-yard line.
Gabbert went against the number one defense on a couple of series on Thursday, and generally looked sharp, as did Franklin. Franklin made a couple of nice throws, one that maybe should have gone for six, that Jerrell Jackson failed to convert.
Glaser did well, too. But, the interceptions were the back-breaker.
It was good to see Bolden, and Tristen Holt, get back in there on Thursday. There's lots of competition at almost every position on the field.
It appears that several of the young receivers are moving up. Sasser and Lucas were both taking a lot of reps with the first and second units. Jimmie Hunt got in on some second-team snaps, and performed well.
