Basketball Tigers Take On Villanova Tonight

Tuesday (6:00 P.M., ESPN), the #10 Missouri Tigers (7-0) take on the Villanova Wildcats (5-2) at Madison Square Garden in New York City.We preview tonight's match-ups.

 

On Tuesday (6:00 P.M., ESPN), the #10 Missouri Tigers (7-0) take on the Villanova Wildcats (5-2) at Madison Square Garden in New York City.   Head Coach Jay Wright's young Wildcats are coming off of a 73-65 win over Penn.  The Wildcats come into the Garden with wins over Monmouth, LaSalle, UC Riverside, and Delaware, in addition to Penn, and losses to St. Louis and Santa Clara.

Villanova is led by a trio of juniors, in 6'2" guard Maalik Wayns, who is averaging 18.7 points/game, 6'10" center Mouphtaou Yarou, with his 16 points/game and 8.4 rebounds/game, and 6'6" guard Dominic Cheek, who is averaging 12.9 points/game and 5 rebounds/game. 

A fourth starter, 6'6" sophomore guard James Bell, is averaging 9.9 points/game.  A 6'6" freshman guard, Darrun Hilliard, completes the starting line-up, with his 7.4 points/game scoring average.

Coach Wright has some depth off of the bench, including 6'7" 260 pound freshman forward Jayvaughn Pinkston, who has started one game and is averaging just under 20 minutes/game for the Wildcats.

Villanova goes 8-10 deep against quality opponents, including 6'4" freshman guard Achraf Yacoubou, 6'9" freshman forward Markus Kennedy, 6'11" junior center Maurice Sutton, and 6'3" freshman guard Ty Johnson.

Villanova is shooting 45% from the field, and 35% from behind the 3-PT line.  The Wildcats are hitting 80% of their FTs!  And, they're out-rebounding their opponents by over 8 boards/game.

Missouri is led by a pair of seniors, in Marcus Denmon, who is scoring 20.3 points/game, and Kim English, who is scoring 16.9 points/game.  Denmon is also pulling down 5.7 boards/game, and has a 3.3 assist to turnover ratio in this young season.  He's shooting 53% from the field, including 48% from behind the arc, and 89% at the FT line.  Denmon's also averaging just under 2 steals/game.

English is shooting 59% from the field and 57% from 3-PT land.

Senior big man, Ricardo Ratliffe is scoring 13.9 points/game and grabbing 6.6 rebounds/game.  His 71.4% field goal percentage is tops in the Big 12, and second in the nation.

At 11.6 points/game off of the bench, Michael Dixon gives the Tigers four players averaging double-digit scoring.  Dixon is also averaging 2 steals/game, to go along with his 2.4 assists/game.

Sophomore point guard Phil (Flip) Pressey attacks on both ends of the floor.  He's averaging 4.9 assists/game, and has a 2.4 assist to turnover ratio.  Flip is collecting 2.6 steals/game.

Missouri leads the Big 12, ranks second nationally, in scoring margin, at 27.9 points/game, trailing only Ohio State in that category.

Marcus Denmon said that he is excited about playing in Madison Square Garden.  He talked about the experience and the leadership on the team that has allowed Missouri to handle adversity, and to play at a high level each time out.

"We've got a really hard-working bunch of guys,"  explained Denmon.  "We've got a senior-led team.  When you have experience, that comes with it, being able to handle when something's not going right, or even when things are going well."
