After Missouri signed the number one player in the country, in WR Dorial Green-Beckham 6'6" 225 4.4 Springfield (MO) Hillcrest, Missouri Head Coach Gary Pinkel left little doubt that it is his intent to make sure that his prize recruit has an immediate on the field impact.
Coach Pinkel talked about getting Green-Beckham ready to play right away.
"He's going to have to learn things," explained Coach Pinkel, talking about getting the uber-talented freshman up to speed. "He'll just have to start learning the system. We all know, you know, you can see his ability. It's obvious. We'll find the right spot for him, and the learning part of it, working with him. I'm sure he'll do a good job. We'll see where it goes. As you well know, in our system, we can put you anywhere on the field we want to put you, and we can get the ball to you. We've proven that we can do that. So, we're really excited about looking at that, and see which way we're going to go."
Missouri Offensive Coordinator David Yost talked about how he sees such a high-profile recruit as Dorial Green-Beckham fitting in with his teammates, and being just one of the guys.
"We make sure that the recruits feel the love from us in the whole process," explained Coach Yost. "And once they get here, guess what? He's just one of the hundred and five. That's what (Dorial Green-Beckham) will be. He'll look forward to that. He will not be a guy that expects anything special, or anything different. He'll want to be just one of the guys. He'll fit right in."
Coach Yost talked about the synergy between Dorial Green-Beckham and Missouri QB James Franklin.
"What James showed this year was he has a really good ability to get the ball down the field, vertically down the field," said Coach Yost.
"It's probably better than I expected, and probably better than I got him to do last spring in practice. That will be something that we will continue to work on. He has shown to be able to do that at a much higher rate than probably any sophomore that I've had at this point."
"What Dorial gives you is a guy to throw the ball to down the field," continued Coach Yost. "Like what we had with Danario. And, he has the speed of what J-Mac has. I mean, he gives you another weapon to go along with Marcus Lucas, and L'Damian Washington, and T.J. Moe."
"And, James has shown the ability to run the football," explained Coach Yost. "He's good at running the football for us. And, our play-action game greatly improved and expanded as the season went along last year. Part of what play-action gives you is the ability to get the ball down the field, because you can get people to bite up. That's where using Dorial second level and down the field for his big body, especially in the red zone, well he gives you another guy, another weapon, to throw to over the top."
Coach Yost said that he's seen Dorial Green-Beckham, "Knock the heck out of people" as a blocker.
"He will be a complete player," said Coach Yost. "He is into being a complete player. He's not a prima donna."
Coach Yost said that thus far, Dorial Green-Beckham has spent very little time in the weight room. He said that Green-Beckham will "blow up" in the weight room.
"Coach Ivey will be able to do wonders with him," explained Coach Yost. "The big thing will be not to get him too big."
I asked Coach Yost if he intends to play Dorial Green-Beckham on the inside or on the outside?
"What we'll probably try to do is to put him in a position where we can bounce him," said Coach Yost. "Because of his vertical speed, I don't think you want to have it where he's never on the outside. But also in our offense, what our inside receivers can do, you can get them the ball a lot……………………………….. I think you want to be able to move him around………………………………… We want to have that flexibility with him. It'll probably be more inside than outside, at this time is our initial thought? But, it'll probably be a spot so we can get him outside some too, and use him on the inside."
