The Missouri staff looked all over the country for a prospect to carry on the tight end tradition at Missouri. After the announcement that Missouri would be joining the SCE conference, the Tiger staff identified and eventually signed a talented small school athlete in TE Sean Culkin 6'5" 220 Largo (FL) Indian Rocks Christian.
Culkin is an athletic receiver with good hands who presents an excellent red zone target. He chose Missouri over offers from Central Florida, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kansas, Miami (FL), Ohio, Rutgers, and South Florida.
Following a senior season in which made 55 receptions for 981 yards and 18 TDs, Culkin was named First-Team All-State as well as a U.S. Air Force First-Team All-American. Culkin, who played for Coach Mark Buchanan, received All-County recognition as a junior, when he made 28 receptions for 547 yards and 8 TDs. That followed a sophomore season in which Culkin had 29 receptions for 522 yards and 6 TDs.
Culkin is an outstanding all-around athlete who scored over 1,000 points for his school's basketball team, and also holds school records in the long jump, and 400-meter dash. His parents are Chuck and Sherry Culkin.
Missouri Assistant Coach Brian Jones was the primary recruiter on Culkin.
"We liked how athletic Culkin was," said Coach Jones. "When I saw him in person, he had the size to go along with that athleticism…………………………………….. He's a very athletic kid. He runs good routes. He catches the ball very well. They used him in the backfield, all over the field."
Missouri Offensive Coordinator David Yost talked about Culkin.
"We think Sean Culkin can come in and contribute early," explained Coach Yost. "Culkin fits into the mold of the guys we've had here…………………………………. He's a tall, lean guy that can run really well, catch the football, and make plays. We're very excited about him!"
JP's Take: There is a lot to be excited about with Sean Culkin. He is a big, athletic target with good hands and runs very well. He is also tough and physical both with the ball in his hands and without out. He can be a nice downfield blocker as well. He uses his height to his advantage, and goes up and gets the ball using his leaping ability. Catches the ball away from his body very well and displays good hands. He runs hard with the ball after the catch. Sean makes a great red zone target or great target over the middle of the field.
