Offered Big Athlete To Give Mizzou A Look

The Missouri Tigers will be among the teams that will be getting a good look from one of the top big athletes in the South who will likely wind up playing defensive line in college, but is athletic enough to be given a shot on offense.

The Missouri Tigers have extended a scholarship offer to a talented 2014 defensive line prospect in Derek Barnett   6’4”  265  Brentwood (TN) Brentwood Academy.   Barnett took time to speak with ShowMeMizzou.com, and he talked about his Missouri interest, and he updated us on his recruitment.

“Missouri has offered me a scholarship,”  said Barnett, who said he has been talking to Missouri Assistant Coach Craig Kuligowski and Head Coach Gary Pinkel.

Barnett reports offers from Arkansas, Georgia Tech, LSU, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Nebraska, South Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt, in addition to Missouri.

“I like it that (Missouri) is in the SEC,”  said Barnett, indicating a preference for playing in the SEC.   “I’m going to look at a bunch of SEC schools.”

Barnett is a multi-sport athlete who plays basketball and throws for his school’s track team,   He recently ran a 4.89 laser-timed forty, posted a 29” standing vertical jump, a 4.53 shuttle, and a maximum bench press of 285 pounds.

He said that Missouri is recruiting him to play defensive line or tight end.

“They said I could play whatever I want,”   explained Barnett.   “I mean, once I get in the college weight room, I’ll probably end up playing D-line.”

Barnett said that he’s planning to visit Missouri mid-summer.

“I’m going to give Missouri a look,”  said Barnett.   “I want to learn more about them.”

Aldon Smith is my favorite player,”  said Barnett, talking about the former Missouri and current San Francisco Forty-Niners defensive end.

Barnett is planning to narrow things down early this summer, but he’s not planning to make a decision until later in the year.

“I’m going to narrow it down out of respect to other schools,”   explained Barnett.   “To just the schools that I want to look at.”

I’ll have more on Derek Barnett later.
