With Missouri Spring Football in the book, senior LB Donovan Bonner took time to speak with ShowMeMizzou.com, and he talked about heading into his senior season, and playing linebacker.
“It don’t really feel like I should be a senior,” said Bonner. “But man, time flies. People say that all of the time, and I’m like ‘yeah, whatever’. But time does fly! So now, I tell that to the (younger guys). Man, time really does fly!”
Bonner has played all three LB positions during his time at Missouri. This spring, he’s listed as the starter on the strong-side.
“We’ve all got a lot of work to do,” explained Bonner. “We’ve got a young group of guys. Lots of talent, which is exciting! Everyone’s excited! We’ve got a bunch of young guys, and we’ve got to work hard. I mean, there’s not a lot of experience, but we definitely have the talent to get it done.”
“We’ve got a long ways to go,” said Bonner, talking about being listed as the starter this spring. “I’m still working hard. There’s a bunch of competition. I’ve helped contribute over the years, and I’m just trying to increase my load.
Bonner’s best 40-yard dash time at Missouri is 4.51 seconds. He measures 6’2” 245 pounds. He also reported personal bests of 36” in the standing vertical jump, and 23 reps at 225 pounds in the bench press.
“Man, I’m just trying to improve,” explained Bonner, who pointed out that he wants to improve his fundamentals. “I’ve just got to keep working on my fundamentals, and just being a student of the game. I’m just working hard. I’m just working hard every day, improving fundamentally. I’m increasing my leadership role, and just trying to help the team as much as possible.”
Bonner talked about some of the young LBs in the room. He began by talking about RSF Torey Boozer.
“Torey’s my little brother,” said Bonner. “He’s a great athlete! He’s got nice size. Torey’s a great athlete!”
“We’ve got a lot of great athletes,” explained Bonner, citing Boozer, Kentrell Brothers, Darvin Ruise, Donavin Newsom, and Michael Scherer. “We’ve got a bunch of great athletes at the linebacker position. And, they’re young guys.”
