Two of the top prospects in the Missouri Tigers 2013 football recruiting class that they signed will be taking a detour to Mizzou by way of Hutchinson (KS) Community College.
ShowMeMizzou.com spoke with one of them, 4-star RB Chase Abbington today to get the details from him.
"I will be spending the next year and a half at Hutch," said Abbington. "I just found about it yesterday after I exhausted my options to be able to attend Mizzou. I was looking at possibly still being able to go to Mizzou but be on academic probation for a year, and then play the next season, but the just of it is that the SEC has certain rules that they wound up not allowing it to happen."
Abbington is understandably disappointed, but he is taking things in stride, and looks at it as a teachable moment for both him and his younger brother Drew, who is a a promising football prospect in his own right as a 5'11" 180-pound freshman-to-be running back at Ft. Zumwalt South.
"I was close to making it, but my freshman and sophomore years came back to haunt me. I did well, including this season and worked hard to make up for not doing what I needed to do, but I just came up short," Abbington said. "I have already passed what I know now along to my little brother, and he is making sure to take classes he will need to avoid this happening to him. Back when I was a freshman or sophomore, I didn't think I would be going to college, so I didn't do what I needed to. I'm down about not going this year, but I am not that down. I will go to Hutch for a year and a half, do the work I need to do, get my associates degree, and head to Mizzou and do great things, I am 100% Missouri still."
Chase talked about the plan regarding him heading to Hutchinson.
"I leave on June 11th to go to Hutch. Antar Thompson will also be going there, and I know a couple of other guys who will heading there. I will be red-shirting this year, and then play one year, and transfer in the spring to Mizzou once I get my associates degree. In the meantime, I will get better and strong and do what I need to do," he said.
Chase told me that the Hutchinson coach was disappointed that he would be red-shirting, and was hoping to use his talents this year.
Abbington will have three years of eligibility when he arrives at Missouri in the spring of 2015 if things go according to plan.
