Earlier this year, Missouri offered 2014 DE prospect Derek Barnett 6’4” 270 Brentwood (TN) Brentwood Academy. This week, Barnett spoke with ShowMeMizzou.com, and he talked about his Missouri interest, and he updated us on his recruitment.
Barnett said he has continued to speak with Missouri Assistant Coach Craig Kuligowski and Head Coach Gary Pinkel on a regular basis, and that he’s still considering Missouri.
‘It’s going good,” said Barnett. “I talk to (Missouri) on a regular basis, so like every week or two………………………………………… I talk to (Missouri) on a regular basis.” Barnett reports offers from Arkansas, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, LSU, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ohio State, South Carolina, South Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Washington, in addition to Missouri.
Barnett said that he doesn’t have an official final list of schools, but he did identify a few schools that he’s still considering. He named Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt, in addition to Missouri, as schools that he is considering.
“I’m not sure where I want to go right now,” explained Barnett. “Those are the ones standing out to me. It’s not an official top list or anything.”
Barnett has taken unofficial visits to Missouri, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Ohio State. He’s making plans to take official visits. Barnett is a multi-sport athlete who plays basketball and throws for his school’s track team. This spring, he ran a 4.89 laser-timed forty, posted a 30” standing vertical jump, a 4.53 shuttle, and a maximum bench press of 285 pounds.
He said that Missouri is recruiting him to play defensive end. He said that he expects to play defensive end in college at around 285 pounds. Barnett is good friends with a couple of Missouri commits, Paul Adams and Thomas Richard. He said that his friends have been encouraging him to join them at Missouri.
"We talk on a regular basis, too," explained Barnett, referring to his friends. "They're trying to get me to go (to Missouri) with them. I mean, it'd be cool to play with them, but at the end of the day, it's the best decision for me." Barnett said that he’s planning to visit Missouri sometime this fall. He said that a decision could come this fall or after the season.
