ShowMeMizzou.com has the latest regarding Missouri commit and 2014 WR prospect Darnell Green-Beckham 6'5" 175 Springfield (MO) Hillcrest, who according to his father, John Beckham, will sign with Missouri on National Signing Day.
"Darnell is going to sign on Wednesday with Mizzou," said John Beckham. "I still think it's going to be kind of up in the air whether or not he's going to grey-shirt or not, kind of depending on how he's coming along in the next few months. My general belief is that he'll probably grey-shirt."
John Beckham went on to explain that a grey-shirt for Darnell means that he won't become a full-time student at Missouri until in January 2015, but that in the meantime, he can begin taking college coursework at his own expense on a part-time basis, either at Mizzou, or at a junior college in the Springfield, MO area.
"It's a unique circumstance," explained John Beckham, speaking of his 17-year-old son who in September just completed a three-year course of treatment for leukemia. "There's a lot of options. So those things will kind of be undecided until May or June of this year…………………………………….. Those are decisions that we haven't made yet."
A grey-shirt means that Darnell's eligibility clock won't begin until next January.
"I think it's in his best interest," said John Beckham. "I think it's a good thing for Darnell……………………………………….. I think Darnell feels good about it. He understands it. He knows he needs the extra time."
John Beckham went on to say that Darnell is eating better and beginning to gain some weight. He played football last fall at Hillcrest, where his dad is the coach, and he's playing basketball this winter.
"He's moving in the right direction," explained John Beckham.
"There's no doubt he will take some college coursework," explained John Beckham, explaining what Darnell will be doing from the time he graduates from high school in May to when he enrolls as a full-time student at Missouri next January.
It's yet to be determined where Darnell will take those part-time courses.
"I think our preference, and I would say what is the most likely scenario, is that he will go ahead and enroll at Mizzou part time," explained John Beckham. "That'd be my guess."
John Beckham said that Darnell may be able to begin taking classes part-time at Mizzou as early as this summer.
"It's not a hundred percent," explained John Beckham, referring to decisions that his family will make in a few months. "I think it'll work. I think it's a good situation."
