Red-shirt freshman LB Eric Beisel begins the spring listed second on the Depth Chart at MLB. With his hard-hitting style, Beisel reminds some of Andrew Wilson, but Beisel's already bigger and faster than Wilson was at the same stage. So if he can bring some of what Wilson brought on the field, he just might find his way into the starting line-up this fall.
During the first week of Spring Football, ShowMeMizzou.com spoke with Beisel, and he talked about how his spring is going, and some of what he hopes to accomplish this spring.
"I like playing in the middle," said Beisel. "I like the best opportunity to get to the ball, and make plays for the team. And, I feel like the best place to do that is in the middle."
The red-headed Besiel simply can't avoid the comparisons to Wilson. He doesn't seem to mind. "(Wilson) played the position really well," explained Beisel. "He flew to the ball well, and I learned a lot from him."
Beisel wants to win the starting job.
"I'm here to help the team," explained Beisel. "And, I feel like the best opportunity for me to do that is being on the field…………………………………… I want to earn the respect of my teammates and coaches. That's vital!"
Beisel said that he's memorized the entire play book, and that he's ready to play. At 6'3", he weighs around 235-240 pounds. He said that he completed 24 reps at 225 pounds on the bench. Beisel has continued to improve in pass coverage. But, it's in run support where he will make his mark.
"I hit people," admitted Beisel. "I carry the hammer."
