ShowMeMizzou.com has learned that there's considerable mutual interest between Missouri and a junior college guard from the Bronx (NY) who played a couple of years ago at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly (MO).
ShowMeMizzou.com spoke with 2014 combo guard Giovanni McLean 6'1" 190 Valhalla (NY) Westchester Community College, and he confirmed that Missouri has offered him a scholarship. He also talked about his interest in Missouri, his visit plans, and his recruitment.
"I think the Missouri offer is big," said McLean. "I played at Moberly a year. I kind of know the situation and the area. I know a lot about Mizzou. I like it!"
Mclean confirmed that he and his Westchester Head Coach, Tyrone Mushatt, are meeting with Missouri Head Coach, Frank Haith, in New York, on Friday. He also expects to take an official visit to Missouri early next week.
"Missouri looks like a great situation for me," said Mclean, who named Missouri as his top school. "I like Missouri."
McLean also has offers from DePaul, Duquesne, Eastern Illinois, Fordham, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas State, and Virginia Tech. And, he's hearing from St. John's and South Florida. He's already visited Texas State, and he has yet to schedule any other visits. He suggested that Missouri could be his final visit.
"Like I said, I really do like Mizzou a lot," said McLean, who went on to say that signing with Mizzou next week is "very likely."
McLean led Westchester to a 28-5 record and their first NJCAA Tournament appearance in nearly twenty years. As a sophomore, the Bronx native averaged 16.8 points/game, 4.6 rebounds/game, and 7.4 assists/game, with a 3.7 assist-to-turnover ratio, while shooting over 43% from 3-PT range.
