Missouri Products Shine At Pro Day

The University of Missouri had 10 NFL Draft-eligible prospects competing at its annual Pro Day on Wednesday.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — University of Missouri linebacker Kentrell Brothers and offensive linemen Evan Boehm and Connor McGovern got to show what they were capable of at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in late February.

That wasn’t the case for the University of Missouri’s other Draft-eligible prospects, like cornerback Kenya Dennis, running back Russell Hansbrough and safety Ian Simon. They had to wait for the Tigers’ Pro Day on Wednesday to show out in front of NFL scouts.

“Today was everything for me,” Dennis said. “With me not getting a Combine invite, this was like my Combine.”

He made the most of his opportunity.

After measuring in at 5-feet-11 and a chiseled 200 pounds, Dennis recorded 17 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press, a 36-inch vertical leap, 10 feet-5 inch broad jump and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds before doing positional drills.

“I think overall I did a pretty good job,” the cornerback said.

The 40 time and the bench press reps, which were a personal best, were a source of pride for the Mississippi native.

“I’m proud of my 40 and my bench reps,” Dennis said. “I worked pretty hard for that over the offseason. I’m pretty happy that I did well in those drills.”

Dennis, who said he met with coaches from the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears on Tuesday, admitted to being a little nervous at the start of the day, but the nervousness went away pretty quickly.

Then it was time to shine in front of a group of 32 scouts from more than 20 NFL teams.

It wasn’t the sizable crowd that has descended upon the Missouri indoor facility in previous years when the Tigers had projected first-round picks, but it still provided an opportunity for Dennis and his teammates to show what they are capable of.

“I talked to a few of the guys,” Dennis said of his teammates. “Everybody was in high spirits and just happy to be able to come out and perform today. It’s probably the last workout we’ll all do together, so we’re just happy we were able to come out and do it together.”

Missouri was represented on Wednesday by kicker Brothers, Boehm, McGovern, Dennis, running backs Hansbrough and Tyler Hunt, Simon, kicker Andrew Baggett, tight end Clayton Echard and wide receiver Wesley Leftwich

Brothers was disappointed in his performance at the Combine, but improved on his numbers on Wednesday with a 4.73 40-yard dash and 31.5 inch vertical leap.

“I was really stressing about the 40 and I improved a lot,” Brothers said. “I thought the drills went well, improved my vertical, didn’t improve the bench but overall I thought I had a good day.”

Boehm and McGovern opted to let their Combine numbers stand and only worked through positional drills for the coaches and scouts.

Hansbrough, who rushed for 465 yards during an injury-plagued senior season, showed off his explosiveness by recording three personal-best marks during testing: a 4.38 second 40-yard dash time, 17 bench press reps and broad jump of 9 feet, 6.5 inches.
