Alabama High School Teammates Shine At Missouri's 'Night At The Zou'

Alabama high school standouts Jamal Brooks and Jhalin Witherspoon enjoyed their trip to Mizzou.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Missouri hosted prospects from all over for ‘Night At The Zou’ on Saturday, including a pair of Bessemer (Al.) City High School teammates, Jamal Brooks and Jhalin Witherspoon

Brooks, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker, received an offer from Missouri months ago. Witherspoon, a 6-2, 296-pound defensive tackle, was hoping to impress the coaches enough to get one.

“It was a pretty fun camp,” Brooks told BlackAndGoldIllustrated.com on Saturday, at the conclusion of the Tigers’ ‘Night At The Zou’ event. “I got to come out and compete like never before. It’s my first trip up to Missouri and it was a memorable one. That counts a lot.”

A three-star recruit rated as the 36th-best inside linebacker in the Class of 2017, Brooks has offers from several schools, including Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Louisville and Maryland and interest from Alabama, Auburn and others.

Brooks’ first trip to Missouri definitely made an impact on him.

“This is a trip that has my thinking,” the standout linebacker said. “Of course I have to talk it over with my parents and my coaches, get more in depth on Missouri itself, but it’s going to weigh in pretty heavy. It’s going to weigh in pretty heavy. Tonight’s trip is going to weigh a lot.”

The camp also could factor in Witherspoon’s recruitment.

He could have put himself in position for a potential offer from the Tigers. Currently, his offers are from Alabama State, Alcorn State and Hampton.

“I heard he went up against one of the kids that actually has a scholarship from Missouri and balled out on him,” Brooks said of his teammate. “So if that’s not enough information then I don’t know what is.”

Witherspoon, who said he loved the campus and thought it was a good camp, said he received good feedback from the Tigers coaches, including defensive line coach Jackie Shipp.

“The defensive line coach said he was liking my performance,” Witherspoon said. “He said he was going to take this film and go from there.”
