The 6-foot-4, 185-pounder from St. Louis, whose offer list includes Missouri, Saint Louis, Texas A&M, Marquette, Kansas State, Iowa State, Creighton and DePaul, has been on campus twice this summer and three times in the past year, including the Homecoming football game last fall.
Watson was among the basketball recruits on campus last weekend — along with 2017 point guard C.J. Roberts, who committed a few days later, and 2018 power forward Carte'Are Gordon, one of the top recruits in his class — when the Tigers’ football program hosted Georgia in a Southeastern Conference game on Saturday night.
Watson’s earlier trip to Columbia this summer was more like your standard recruiting visit, watching the team practice, talking to players and coaches and getting the tour of campus. This time was different, he said, and better.
“A whole lot better,” Watson said.
Watson got to see the current team play some pick-up ball and got to spend some time with the players and coaching staff, including his lead recruiter, assistant Rob Fulford. Later on was football game, a tough 28-27 loss for the home team.
“It was a pretty fun day for me,” Watson said. “I got to hang out with some friends and also a pretty good friend of mine, Carte’Are (Gordon), was there. We’ve been friends since like sixth grade, so it was fun to spend a recruiting trip with him. The football game was good as well, except for the loss. But it was pretty fun.”
Watson said it was a pretty good trip overall. The football game provided him a chance to experience the atmosphere of a Mizzou sporting event.
“I think it was pretty good,” he said. “I enjoyed it.”
What’s next for the Whitfield standout?
“For right now I’m pretty much looking at every school, trying to get some visits coming up, get a feel for the schools that I haven’t been to yet that are recruiting me,” Watson said.
He’s planning to visit Iowa State on Oct. 12 and Marquette at some point in October, though he’s not sure of the exact date.
With the early signing period more than 12 months away, Watson is going to try to check out and learn about as many of the schools recruiting him as possible.
When asked which schools he is considering, he said none in particular.
“Just pretty much everybody right now,” Watson said. “I’m just trying to look around and see what I’m really interested in with different schools. I’ll probably just wait a little bit to start narrowing down my decision.”
