North Carolina 2017 Three-Star DE Zion DeBose Reopens Recruiting

Three-star defensive end Zion DeBose, who received an offer from Missouri last week, decommitted from Appalachian State on Sunday.

North Carolina senior defensive end Zion DeBose committed to Appalachian State this summer but recently visited Virginia Tech unofficially and then received his first Southeastern Conference offer from Missouri.

On Sunday, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound three-star prospect officially decommitted from Appalachian State, a decision he announced via his Twitter account.

“First I would like to thank my parents and close friends for sticking by my side through this recruiting process,” DeBose wrote. “Secondly I would like to thank Appalachian State and staff for giving me this opportunity. But as of now I would like to say I de-commit from App State and would like to reopen my recruitment. App State is still a top school for me but I have to do what’s best for me and my family.”

DeBose told BlackAndGoldIllustrated.com last week the offer from Missouri was a “pretty good surprise.”

“I was surprised when Coach (A.J.) Ofodile hit me up last week and said they were real interested and they had to sit down and watch my film and we could go from there. Today he hit me up again and said they pulled the plug and gave me the offer. I was excited. My first SEC offer. Yeah, I was pretty excited.”

He committed to Appalachian State in July over offers from Charlotte, Duke and East Carolina. He said a few days ago he was still committed to App State but would still consider other schools. In the past few months he has received offers from CincinnatiKansas and Western Michigan before getting the offer from Missouri.

“You only go through this recruiting process once and I want to make sure everything is the right choice,” DeBose said. “If I feel that App is home or if it’s not, I want to make sure I’m doing everything right so I don’t look back on it and make no mistakes or anything like that.”

The offer from Missouri definitely made DeBose think about his decision.

“Me and my parents are planning on sitting down real, real soon and just look at the schools I have potential offers from and who has a chance or is steered my direction of what I want to do in life or will I get potential playing time the soonest,” DeBose said. “We’re going to sit down and actually pick schools pretty school. Every school has a shot right now. Everybody’s even until I sit down and choose what official visits I’ll make.”
