The University of Missouri football coaching staff is working to fill out its 2017 recruiting class and build off a strong 2016 group.
Missouri has 20 verbal commitments and eight of them are defensive players. With a potential total of signing 28 players next month, because of three early enrollees, the Tigers will likely focus more on solidifying the defense with the remainder of this class.
Notes: The Tigers have Chris Turner and junior college sophomore Nathaniel Anderson on board, but could serve to add a few more defensive ends after losing Charles Harris to the NFL. Zion DeBose visited Missouri officially in December but has a busy January with planned official visits to Illinois, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech. Chester Graves, the top prospect in Missouri, took an official visit to Mizzou this past weekend, as did Anderson, but hasn’t given any indication which schools are standing out to him at this point.
Notes: A huge area of need for the Tigers. JUCO sophomore Rashad Brandon, who had an offer from Ole Miss, committed to Missouri during his official visit in December and will have two years of eligibility remaining. Caleb Sampson was committed to Tulane but visited Missouri officially in December and then decommitted from Tulane. He also received an offer from Kansas State. JUCO teammates Walter Palmore and Malik Young have several options to choose from but it’s believed that the Tigers are still in the mix and both would add experience to Missouri. Jaylen Twyman told Scout he will visit Missouri in late January.
Notes: The Tigers could take two or three linebackers in this recruiting class. Jamal Brooks and Aubrey Miller both committed this summer and are expected to sign with Missouri in February, though Miller has said he will keep his options open and take a few official visits. The Tigers have looked around at linebackers and either missed out (like Memphis signee J.J. Russell) or moved on from (Marquise Blair) and don’t seem to be close with any currently.
Notes: The Tigers have to replace senior starters Aarion Penton and John Gibson and have two good prospects committed in Terry Petry and Adam Sparks. Petry flipped his commitment from Houston to Missouri after Tom Herman left the Cougars for the Texas job. Sparks was committed to Vanderbilt when he took an official visit to Missouri last month, but he decommitted from the Commodores and then pledged to the Tigers on Christmas day. Tony Adams picked Illinois over Missouri months ago but has told Scout the Tigers continue to recruit him.
Notes: The Tigers are pretty deep at safety and will likely only take one or two in this recruiting class. Joshuah Bledsoe committed to the Tigers this summer. Jordan Ulmer was committed to Iowa State but was among the official visitors for Mizzou in early December. He’s still looking at other schools. Florida safety Tyree Gillespie is another name to watch.
