Week Three Predictions

Hey, you think this is easy? You try it! Very little has gone according to Hoyle so far this season, so don't blame me. Hopefully this week will go better so I can get this dunce hat off and return to the wizard image!

I want to stress again that these picks are only for entertainment purposes. It has been an absolutely awful year so far. I have never finished below .500 on the year so this is very distressing to me. But we shall continue.

Last week 11-3 Straight Up (year 21-7)

Against the spread 4-9 (no line on KSU), (year 9-18!)

LOCKS - Well I got OSU right to put me 1-2 on the year.

On to this week's picks.

1AA patsies-

KSU plays another one in UMASS and will name their own score.

OSU plays SMSU, I don't understand why SMSU hasn't had more success under their coach. He did a pretty good job at Western Illinois and he seems to know what he is doing. This game is obviously a tremendous mismatch (although SMSU took OSU to overtime a few years ago when OSU was much worse). OSU also names its own score.

MIZZOU plays Eastern Illinois - I live 5.5 hours from Faurot Field, therefore I refuse to attend 1AA games. Criticize me if you like but we have to prioritize and I will make some road games. However, I would love to be there Saturday because they are inducting Brock Olivo onto the Wall of Fame. This guy is tremendously deserving in my mind and had the program not regressed tremendously after the '98 season I don't think this would have taken so long to have happen. Congratulations Brock and I will be cheering to my radio when I hear the ceremony.

As for the game. It won't be competitive. MU was originally supposed to play the 1AA champs but Western Kentucky opted out. It really doesn't matter but EIU actually suffered a fair amount of losses to graduation.

I'll pick a score, MU 41 EIU 6 and Brad Smith does not play the second half. The play of Riccio and Nash was very encouraging last week.

Now on to this week's (lined) games.

GAME OF THE WEEK (At least here in Arkansas)

Arkansas (+12.5) at Texas - I got to see the Hogs on Saturday against a poor Tulsa team. They are running two quarterbacks but I expect to see mostly Matt Jones on Saturday. Jones is an outstanding option type QB when given the opportunity to have some run/pass options. Cedric Cobbs will play on Sundays in my opinion. I think that Arkansas actually has a decent chance to win this game BUT from what I saw the defense is not of the caliber (and misses too many tackles) to contain Williams, Benson etc.

Obviously Texas has an unproven QB but I think their O line will do well and the Arkansas D won't be up to the task. I do think Arkansas will put some points up and the last time the Hogs played Texas it was a surprise... I will still pick Texas to cover 41-24.

GAME #2 of the Week

Penn State (+10) at Nebraska - I had Penn State picked in this one. They really started the slide for the Huskers last year. Nebraska's schedule is shaping up a lot easier than I thought it would be before the season started. It appears that Penn State does not have the offensive or defensive lines to get this done though.

I watched the Utah State game and saw some early cause for concern IF the Huskers play a team with depth on the D line. I don't think PSU has that this year.

Pick the Huskers 28-10

IOWA (-4) AT Iowa State - ISU struggled early but worked over Ohio. I think this is the game that exposes just how far ISU has fallen (if the UNI game did not accomplish this), Iowa destroyed a horrible Buffalo team last week but this one is surprisingly easy. Yes, I know McCarney's record against the Hawks, it doesn't come into play this year. With a big Arkansas/Texas crowd at my place I won't get to see this one unfortunately.

LOCK #1 OF THE WEEK - IOWA 31 ISU 10

WSU (+4) at CU - The Cougars had their shot at Notre Dame. CU continues to find ways to win but they missed an XP to not cover against UCLA (man!). So I will hedge my bet.

CU wins 24-21 (does not cover)

Kansas (+5) AT Wyoming - Hey KU was able to win at Tulsa last year. Wyoming is no better. KU was very impressive against a pretty talented UNLV team. I was shocked by this. This is a huge game for KU but like I said they won by 10 on the road against an awful team last year. This is an awful team.

LOCK (!!!) #2 of the WEEK - KU wins 27-14

Baylor (-2) vs. SMU - Baylor is favored! I have been told to NEVER BET ON BAYLOR! I knew UNT would win but that was an embarrassment, even for Baylor! Because I think Phil Bennett will get that team turned around at least to a degree and he is in his second year (Morris his first) I will pick the upset. (Is any D 1 team beating Baylor an upset?)

Pick SMU 20-14

I almost forgot OKLAHOMA (-29) vs. Fresno State - I watched quite a bit of the Fresno/Oregon State game last Friday. Even though OU has really improved on offense (I think), Fresno is not a bad team. I think they make OU sweat for a half.

Pick Fresno to lose, but cover 34 - 13

A&M and Texas Tech are not playing this week.

I like this North Texas team and will take them at (+8) to upset Air Force.

I will pick a ninth game (so I can get to .500 if I go 9-0!)

Illinois will cover (+10.5) at UCLA, I think Illinois is being downgraded because they lost to an MU team that is underrated. UCLA is still finding its sea legs under a first-year coach.

There you have it. Enjoy your weekend of football, and GO TIGERS!
