Duane John excused from basketball team

Most Elite Eight teams have placid off seasons as a rule. Missouri is serving notice that nothing is a given this off season as reserve freshman guard Duane John was sent packing from the basketball team on Wednesday. The Tigers depth will have a much different look than anticipated in 2003.

University of Missouri Men's Basketball Coach Quin Snyder announced on Wednesday that freshman guard Duane John has been dismissed from the Missouri Basketball Program and will transfer at the end of the semester.

"We are saddened by this decision and wish only the best for Duane in the future, both athletically and academically," Snyder said. "We value the confidentiality that we maintain with our student-athletes and thus will not be commenting further on the specifics of this matter."

John, who had alledgedly been caught with an unspecified amount of marijuana in a University dorm room earlier in the week, is the third player who was expected to be on the Tigers roster next fall to move on during this offseason. Wesley Stokes announced he was transferring last week, and Gid Rinkevious, a 7-2 recruit from Lithuania announced his intent to enter the upcoming NBA draft.

The subtraction of John now gives Quin Snyder four potential scholarships to use in the 2003 recruiting class, or one more for the 2002 class.
