Tigers wake up and pound Ball State

You could see this letdown coming a mile away. A young team with a new starting QB knocks off Illinois in an emotional game. The young QB is mentioned by the national media all week as the new wunderkind of the Big 12. With all of the great press clippings, who could get through all of them in just six days...? Luckily, the Tigers turned up the juice and demolished Ball State 41-6 in the second half.

Yes, the Tigers trailed Ball State 6-0 just a few moments before the start of the second quarter.

Yes, Marcus Merriweather looked like the best running back on the field in the first half, rushing for 115 yards on 26 carries on the night.

Yes, everybody in Black and Gold seemed to be waiting for something good to happen.

Enter senior defensive end Antwaun Bynum who blew around his blocker, stripped Ball State's QB Talmadge Hill of the ball and recovered the fumble on the Ball State 1 yard line.  Zack Abron punched it in two plays later putting Missouri up 7-6.

The Tigers had found the key to break out of their sluggishness...create turnovers.  And create turnovers they did forcing four fumbles, and one interception on the night.  Two of those turnovers led directly to touchdowns.

Keith Wright and the defense swarm Marcus Merriweather

While the offense generated 437 yards of total offense, the real story of the game was the defense's ability to create turnovers at key points in the game.  Brandon Barnes had an excellent game with seven unassisted tackles and one interception.  James Kinney led all Missouri tacklers with eight unassisted and five assisted tackles. Keith Wright also had a solid evening with a total of eight tackles.

Thompson Omboga had his best game as a Tiger catching five balls for 81 yards, with a critical 33 yard reception that led to a Missouri touchdown run by Abron.  It was the longest pass completion by Brad Smith and longest reception by Omboga of both players young careers at Missouri.

Also of note was the final touchdown for the Tigers: a 27-yard pass from Kirk Farmer to Darius Outlaw, who made a very nice play to break a tackle and take in the capper.

The Tigers travel to Bowling Green next weekend to face the Falcons.
