Oklahoma, Mizzou tops for Mo. linebacker
Rockhurst (Mo.) linebacker Cornell Ellis has no lack of Mizzou ties, from multiple family members who are MU alums, to the close proximity, to the fact that he won best linebacker and MVP honors at a Mizzou camp this summer. Still, there's a Big 12 powerhouse hot on his trails, so it'll be interesting to watch how his recruitment develops.
"My parents and my sister all went to Mizzou, so there's a pretty good chance I could end up there," said Ellis, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound outside linebacker. "I've talked to coach Hill and Coach Yost."
Ellis doesn't have his first offer yet but is receiving interest from Mizzou, Kansas State and Oklahoma. The Sooners have been showing a lot of interest; they've already offered him preferred walk-on status and will be checking him out when his team opens the season Aug. 30 at Edmond Santa Fe (Ok.).
"I'm going to hang out with Bob Stoops on Saturday," said Ellis, who feels OU is close to offering him.
Ellis was impressive at Scout.com's Kansas City combine in May, running a 4.48 40-yard dash and showing good skills and athleticism across the board. The biggest thing holding him back from having multiple offers would seem to be his height.
"I think he's a guy who has a lot of potential based on what he did at the combine. He was one of the top three linebackers there. He just has to get that onto the field and I think he'll be a legit DI player," said Scout.com Midlands analyst Greg Powers.
Ellis, who had 60-plus tackles and eight sacks last year, is being recruited as an outside linebacker or safety. He doesn't have any plans for visits, instead choosing to focus on the upcoming season at the in-state powerhouse.
While we had him on the phone, we also got his scouting report on recent Mizzou commit Drew Temple: "He's really fast, really strong and he breaks a lot of tackles. He's been working really hard this year – he had an injury last year – and I've been really impressed with his work ethic."
