Top Juco Forward: "Missouri is my favorite."
That's what Okaloosa-Walton (Fla.) junior college sophomore Keith Ramsay told InsideMizzou.com Monday, and it could be some of the best news in a while on the hoops recruiting front. Ramsey, an ultra-versatile 6-foot-8, 205-pound forward who averaged 11.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, three assists, three steals and 1.7 blocks per game last year as a juco freshman
Ramsey said he is hearing quite frequently from MU's staff, especially assistant coach T.J. Cleveland and head coach Mike Anderson, who have been down South to see him work out this summer more times than he can count. Besides their hard work in the past year or so, the MU coaches already had an ‘in' with Ramsey because they recruited him during his high school days in Murfreesboro, Tenn., when they were coaching at Alabama-Birmingham.
"They've been recruiting me since high school and I'm cool with the coaches," Ramsey said, when asked how Mizzou became his top choice.
Anderson "is a real good coach, a good laid back coach," he continued. "I love the way they play up-tempo, get out and trap and run" the fast break.
The other frontrunner is Arkansas, which is putting a similar full-court press on Ramsey, while UNLV, Minnesota and Tennessee have been recruiting him as well. Ramsey doesn't know when he'll commit, but he plans to take a few official visits this fall and then make a decision.
Earlier this month, Okaloosa-Walton coach Bruce Stewart gave s this scouting report on Ramsey: He's a long, 6-8 three-man. Be brings a lot of shot-blocking and rebounding to the small forward position, but he also has very good ball skills for his size. He can get a rebound, take it up the court and make a point guard play," Stewart said.
We also asked Ramsey to describe his playing style.
"I'm an all-around player. I'm a good ball-handler, I'm becoming a better shooter, I can rebound, play good ‘D,' defend and block shots."
MU also is recruiting his OKC teammate, shooting guard Tay Waller, and could be working on a package deal. Ramsey said the two have discussed the possibility of playing at MU together.
We'll keep you posted on both players…
