Florida Guard Miguel Paul Commits to Mizzou!
Paul committed Friday afternoon, his AAU coach Burney Hayes of Team STAT, confirmed to InsideMizzou.com.
"He verbally committed. He said it was the integrity of the coaching staff that was the nail in the coffin," Hayes said. "He said the facilities and all that were great, just beautiful, but it was the integrity of the coaches that sealed the deal. He doesn't need to look any further."
Paul, whose name emerged recently as a top priority for MU, is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound scoring point guard. He chose Mizzou over offers from Clemson, Wichita State and St. John's, along with interest from VCU, N.C. State, Miami, Georgia Tech and others. He joins Independence (Mo.) big man Steve Moore in Mizzou's '08 class, and gives the Tigers' recruiting class a dynamic backcourt presence.
"Miguel Paul is a combo guard with a zest for scoring the basketball. Some guys are wired up to get in the lane and get buckets and he's one of them," said Scout.com Basketball Recruiting Director Dave Telep.
Paul, a quick, aggressive and versatile guard some have regarded as a top-100 player in his class, led his team to the Florida 4A state semis last year. He saw his stock rise quickly after a very strong performance at the Peach Jam this summer in Atlanta, and Mizzou was one of the most aggressive schools in its pursuit of the rising senior.
He and his family piled into a car mid-week and made the long drive from Lakeland to Columbia, and he committed to head coach Mike Anderson Friday afternoon.
Asked for a scouting report of Paul, Team STAT AAU coach Burney Hayes offered: "Electric. He's electric, energized. He's very crafty with the basketball. He can put it in the whole from deep or make a layup in a tough situation."
"He's a point guard that is a scoring point guard. He's not really a two-guard, but he can find the open man and he can score."
Paul, whose high school produced NFL superstar Ray Lewis and recent college hoops standouts Chris Richard (Florida) and Rashad Anderson (UConn), was the MVP of a talent-laden Frank Spencer Holiday Classic in North Carolina last December. He also has a reputation for being a tenacious man-on-man defender, which is a high priority in Anderson's pressing system.
InsideMizzou.com will have more on Paul after we touch base with him.
