Tues. Camp: Temple's Return, New Depth Chart

The return of Tony Temple and a newly released depth chart with which Mizzou will open the season were the highlights of Tuesday at MU fall camp.

Temple was back in full-contact drills and absent the red jersey for the first time since suffering a bruised knee a week ago, and the Big 12's top returning rusher looked like his old self. He also got a bit of a helping hand from his teammates on the defensive side, who slowed themselves on several occasions rather than trying to get the big hit in.

"Definitely, but I told them, ‘Come hard. You gotta get me ready, boy. Y'all can't be soft on me,'" Temple said. "They're not going after knees or anything like that, so they're just taking care of me."

Temple said he had a difficult time watching from the sidelines for the past six days, though the injury to backup tailback Marcus Woods Monday did not hasten his return.

"Just seeing my guys out there, I want to work with them," he said. "Injuries happen. You've just got to take care of yourself. It's unfortunate for Marcus – he's had that happen a lot – but he'll get back. They know what they're doing, the training staff."

Head coach Gary Pinkel said Woods, who has been plagued by the sort of high ankle sprain he suffered midway through Monday's scrimmage, should be back within a month. He's in a walking cast right now, but it's not as bad as the appearance the cast gives, he said.

"In maybe a week we'll pull it off of him. It looks bad but that's the way they treat high ankle sprains. It really stabilizes it," Pinkel said. "We get guys faster from high ankle sprains than anyone I've ever seen before."

New Depth Chart Released

A few hours after practice, the staff released the depth chart with which it will enter the season (see below). There were no major surprises, but there were a few notables:

---- Junior Ryan Madison beat out senior Monte Wyrick for the left guard job.

---- Junior Earl Goldsmith was listed ahead of Jimmy Jackson at second-strong
running back, though an ‘or' was placed after Goldsmith's name to indicate the may be co-No. 2 backs.

---- Converted running back Connell Davis won the No. 2 spot backing up Sean Weatherspoon at weakside linebacker, meaning touted freshman Michael Keck could be a redshirt candidate.

---- Del Howard moved to No. 2 at free safety behind William Moore, and Pinkel said Howard will be a guy who plays a lot after settling into the position.v v---- Darnell Terrell and Paul Simpson are listed as the starting cornerbacks in the absence of injured sophomore Hardy Ricks. True freshman Carl Gettis is officially on the second string after a strong first 10 days of camp.

Notes from practice:

--- It wasn't all good for Gettis, who was run over by freshman running back Derrick Washington. Washington had a few nice runs and continues to look like a player who will contribute this year. He's listed fourth on the depth chart but offers a nice combination of size (5-11, 200 pounds), speed and both receiving and blocking ability.

Said Pinkel: "The beauty is we have a lot of competition all over the place. Just because it changes once, doesn't mean it's going to stay there."
---- Martin Rucker was unstoppable in the redzone during drills, first beating a hapless defender on an out route for a touchdown, and then diving to snare another scoring pass. Rucker, always the innovator, celebrated by handing out cordial handshakes to his offensive teammates.

---- Freshman Trey Hobson is listed fourth on the depth chart, but he was noticeable for being around the ball throughout drills. He looks like a guy who could be pretty good down the road.

--- The defense again had its hands full with the first-team offense. Hopefully it's a sign of offensive strength and not defensive weakness, but the line is opening up some great holes in the running game.
