Missouri wins opener 72-57 over American

Welcome to Mizzou Ricky Clemons! The Tigers new point guard lit up American University for 25 points, four assists and five rebounds in his debut as Missouri's point guard. Four of Missouri's five starters scored in double figures as Mizzou kicks off the 2002-03 season in impressive fashion.

It was a refreshing change for Quin Snyder to have his point guard be the difference in the game.  From a positive standpoint, that is.

When American settled into their zone defense in the second half, it was Clemons who exploited the zone.

Ricky Clemons found many ways to contribute in Mizzou's win

"He was the only one playing with a lot of confidence against that zone in the second half, but yet it's his responsibility to set his teammates up too. So for a scoring point guard, that's a tough chore," said Jeff Jones, American's head coach.

Rickey Paulding scored 19 points, had five rebounds and three steals.  Quin Snyder complemented Paulding after the game for letting the game come to him and showing patience.

"American went zone, and part of that is Rickey growing as a player. It says a lot about Rickey's character that he's not going to press if it's not there. Rickey was really concerned about getting the big guys involved, and that's something we've emphasized a lot and didn't do as good a job of in the first half. I want him to get the big guys involved, but I also want him to stay aggressive. He did a great job of taking what was there, but you want him to remain aggressive."

Mizzou's big men took care of business on the blocks and the boards.  Travon Bryant and Arthur Johnson scored 11 points each, and combined to grab 18 rebounds.

Another newcomer for the Tigers also had a significant debut.  Freshman PF Kevin Young scored four points and grabbed six rebounds in just 13 minutes for Mizzou.  The newly chiselled Young figures to provide needed front court depth and aggressiveness for Missouri's front line.

American presented Missouri with a variety of suprising looks in this game.

Quin Snyder said after the game, "We wanted to play well, and I think at times we did play well. We held them to 34 percent shooting and less than 30 in the first half. We forced 18 turnovers. It's a little bit of an unconventional game; they played four small guys at times, and they pull you out from the basket. There were some things we didn't do that I know we can do, like we didn't guard screen-and-rolls, for example, and that's something we've practiced for 50 hours in the last two weeks."

However, the star of the night was clearly Missouri's new point guard.

Josh Kroenke summed it up best, "Ricky did a great job of that (creating points) tonight. He was coming of screens ready to shoot...it's nice to have Ricky Clemons knocking down the shots like that."

Welcome to Columbia Ricky Clemons!
