Tigers devour Governors

Call him a good luck charm or call him good. It doesn't really matter to Jimmy McKinney what you call him as long as he's on the floor. Wearing a mask that would qualify him for the lead in most productions of "Phantom of the Opera", the freshman guard was just one of the cast of Tigers who turned Saturday's game into a tragedy for Austin Peay.

Something was just missing for Missouri in their opener vs. American University.

They had their new point guard...check!

They had their returning big guys down low...check!

They even discovered a new lithe force off the bench in the presence of one Kevin Young...check!

What Missouri was missing was a player who had never played a minute for the Tigers and yet, had felt a part of this program for a long time.  Tiger fans, please help us to officially welcome Jimmy McKinney to the Tiger program!

McKinney, who racked up state championships at Vashon High in St. Louis like they were a compulsary course there, showed up on Saturday wearing a high-tech mask designed to protect a forehead that had been caved in during the preseason.

McKinney's mask didn't hide the young man's obvious talents as he immediately contributed to the effort by launching an NBA-length three pointer and pressing the action on both ends of the court during his 16 minutes of action.

"Jimmy doesn't seem to be taking it easy," coach Quin Snyder said. "He loves playing so much, it just comes out. I don't think he's ever been hurt before and he clearly missed it."

While the spotlight was on McKinney's return, Arthur Johnson and Ricky Paulding had another workmanlike effort scoring a combined 30 points.  Paulding also just missed his first double-double of the year by grabbing 9 boards on the night.

Travon Bryant was the only other Tiger in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Missouri shot 48 percent, including 9-for-21 from 3-point range with six players connecting.

With his block tonight, Johnson is only 12 blocks off Missouri's school record for career blocks which is currently held by Steve Stipanovich.  AJ current has 137 blocks.

Austin Peay (2-1) was no pushover for Missouri after upsetting Memphis 81-80 in overtime in its opener on  November 22nd.  However, the Tigers were on their game today.
