James Franklin is a 6 foot 2, 223 pound quarterback out of Dallas Lake, Texas. Last year Franklin threw for 2,452 yards and 24 touchdowns while completing 68% of his passes.
He also managed to tack on 1,052 yards on the ground with 18 touchdowns. As a junior, Franklin was named the offensive MVP of his district and he was an all-state honorable mention. Much like Daniel's days at Westlake Carrol, Franklin has directed the same spread offense used by Missouri.
Franklin's familiarity with the Tiger attack may factor into his decision. When asked about his schools of choice, Missouri was the first team Franklin named.
"I would like to go there. I mean, they have a good football program. My high school runs the same offense. I would be comfortable in the Missouri offense. And I lived in Rolla so I know a good deal about Missouri."
Along with Mizzou, Franklin is interested in Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Kansas, TCU, Michigan, Tennessee, Northwestern and Baylor. But the Tiger offense has definitely caught the eye of this Texas product.
"I like throwing out of the shotgun. Usually a QB will line up 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage in the shotgun. But I noticed Chase Daniel lines up 6 or 7 yards behind the line. I like that. I'll line up under center but I'm much more comfortable out of the shotgun. So that's important."
With experience running an offense similar to Missouri's, he would have a seemingly smooth transition into the Tiger program.
Plus, James Franklin does have some tools that are similar to those of former Heisman finalist Chase Daniel. With a 68% completion rate, Franklin has the ability to run an offense efficiently. He also has some mobility; Franklin runs a 4.69 in the 40. But does he have the talent to play QB in the Big 12?
"I definitely want to play QB. If I really have to I would consider playing WR or another position though." Although Franklin has yet to receive a scholarship offer, he has been talking with Missouri assistant Bruce Walker. Could one from the Tigers be on the way?
"Missouri seems to be very close to offering," Franklin said. "I hope they do."
He will make a trip to Columbia on March 13th. Currently Franklin is preparing for his senior year and looking to improve on a successful junior campaign.
With signing day a year away, what the future holds for James Franklin remains to be seen. He isn't getting the attention some other Texas QBs are receiving, but neither did Chase Daniel.
Maybe, in James Franklin, the Tigers can bring in another talented Texas QB other schools have overlooked.
