Tigers advance to championship game with win

The Missouri Tigers advanced to the championship game of the South Padre Invitational by beating Old Dominion 66-61

The Missouri Tigers (4-0) advanced into the championship game of the South Padre Invitational on Saturday (7:00 P.M., FCS) against the Richmond Spiders (5-1) with a well-earned 66-61 win Friday evening over the Old Dominion University Monarchs (4-1).
Missouri trailed 9-8 midway through the first half, then went on a 24-9 run that was fueled by the Tigers' pressure defense, harassing ODU into 17 first-half turnovers, and Missouri took a 32-18 lead into the locker room.  The Monarchs handled Missouri's defensive pressure much better in the second half, and sat back in a zone defense which gave Missouri pause, and tilted the pace of the game in favor of ODU.  The Monarchs cut Missouri's lead to 8 with just under two minutes remaining, when Zaire Taylor stepped into a three-point shot from the right wing and extended the Tigers' lead back to 11.   After that, ODU began fouling the Tigers, and Marcus Denmon, Kim English, and J.T. Tiller sealed the victory by making their FTs.

After the game, Missouri Head Coach Mike Anderson talked about the win.  "Against a very good Old Dominion team, I thought we came out and really kind of created tempo.  We didn't shoot the ball particularly well, but Old Dominion's a good basketball team, and you knew in the second half, they were going to make a run.  But, I thought guys came off the bench and gave us some quality minutes.  And, I thought Keith (Ramsey) really played well early on............... Our guys, if you look at it, we actually won this game on the free throw line."

Old Dominion's zone defense was pretty effective against the Tigers, as they cut the Tigers' second-half lead to 4, but never got any closer.
Coach Anderson addressed the ODU zone.  "Credit Old Dominion.  They went to a little zone, and I thought we got a little more tentative.  And, we kind of settled for jump shots.  And before you knew it, momentum shifted back to them."

Senior guard Marsharee Neely of Old Dominion led all scorers with 20 points.  Missouri's Tiller lead a balanced Tiger offense with 12 points and seven assists. Kim English added 11 points.  Ramsey had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks, and an assist.  8 Missouri players scored at least 6 points.
