Mizzou Rally Falls Short Against Vandy

The Missouri Tigers ran out of time after coming back against Vanderbilt on the road in 89-83 loss

The Vanderbilt Commodores (5-1) defeated the Missouri Tigers (4-2) on Wednesday night in Nashville by the score of 89-83.  Vanderbilt enjoyed big advantages on the boards and at the free-throw line, and held a double digit lead throughout most of the second half.  Missouri's defensive pressure coaxed Vanderbilt into twenty-four turnovers.  Missouri made a furious run beginning with about minutes left in the game to cut Vanderbilt's lead to one at 84-83 with 1:16 to go in the game.  But, according to Missouri Head Coach Mike Anderson, Missouri failed to make "the right plays going down the stretch".

Missouri played the last several minutes of this game with Keith Ramsey and four guards, usually J.T. Tiller, Zaire Taylor, Marcus Denmon, and Kim English.  Mike Dixon had a very good game, and played some down the stretch, as well.  Coach Anderson indicated that Justin Safford "is a little gimpy", and Laurence Bowers "got in foul trouble".

Coach Anderson had this to say about the game.  "I thought we just ran out of time............. We were right there within striking distance.  I thought we just kind of lost our poise a little bit going down the stretch.............. To me, this was a learning experience for our team.  This is a young basketball team, and you could see them really grow up tonight."

Missouri was out-rebounded 47-26, and out-shot from the field 50%-43%.  Each team had four players in double figures.  Once again, Coach Anderson shortened his bench, with only nine players seeing the floor, and Steve Moore for only four minutes.  After impeding his team's efforts for much of the game, Kim English found the range during Missouri's late run, and seemed to hit everything he threw up.  But in the end, a couple of ill-advised shot attempts by English, and another one by Tiller, helped to squelch the Tigers' comeback attempt.

Coach Anderson talked about Dixon and Taylor.  "I think (Mike Dixon) learned. I talk about this team.  This is going to be a team that's going to find its identity.  We'll find the guys we're going to count on.  I thought Mike did real well, when you talk about in a hostile environment. I thought he settled down and got in there. He got a little anxious early on.  Then he settled down, and made some big plays.  His quickness was very evident out there, just really disrupting."
"The guy that really stepped up tonight big is Zaire Taylor. You could see it coming, though.  That guy there is really going to be a key to our basketball team.  He made big plays, whether it be defensively or offensively.  He's just kind of a glue guy.  And, as this team continues to really build, we're going to be a very good basketball team.  As I told them in there, I think I found my team, especially in the second half."
