Tigers Fall On The Road 60-59

The Missouri Tigers lost on the road to Oral Roberts on a last second shot to 60-59

The Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles (6-4) defeated the Missouri Tigers (5-3) at the Mabee Center in Tulsa on Wednesday evening by the score of 60-59.  ORU's Michael Craion connected on a last-second lay-in for the final score, after Missouri's Marcus Denmon failed to convert the front end of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity with eight seconds on the clock.

ORU controlled the beginning and the end of the game, while Missouri took over the middle of the game.  Missouri trailed by ten with under three minutes remaining in the half when Mike Anderson inserted Mike Dixon, who teamed up with Marcus Denmon, J.T. Tiller, Keith Ramsey, and Laurence Bowers to to take Missouri on a 12-0 run to close out the half.  Denmon scored six of his team-high 17 points during that late first-half run, but it was the quality defense that this unit played during those final three minutes that ignited the run.

Coach Anderson was mixing up his defensive calls, and this group of Tigers were effective applying full court pressure, and also playing a match-up zone.

A Marcus Denmon lay-up off of a Mike Dixon pass extended Missouri's lead to eleven about midway through the second half, and following a Denmon 3-PT field goal, Missouri was back up by ten with just over seven minutes to go in the game.  Missouri scored just four points the rest of the way, and ORU's Dominique Morrison scored seven points and dished out two big assists down the stretch, as ORU closed out the win on a 15-4 run.

Starting guard Kim English collected just one rebound in twenty-five minutes, as the Tigers were out-rebounded by a 39-32 margin.  Ramsey led the team with nine rebounds and three steals.  Denmon, who played only nineteen minutes, and Dixon, who played only eleven minutes, each pulled down three rebounds.

Afterward, Coach Anderson talked about the game.  "You got to give Oral Roberts credit.  They didn't just fold their tents............. On the road, teams are going to make runs back at you.  You got to make some plays.  And, we got to be able to finish off games.  I thought we had this one, but then we let it get away."
On this night, Missouri left their defensive mindset back in Columbia.  All three starting guards spent way too much time dribbling the basketball, which resulted in too many forced, low-percentage shots.  The Tigers finished the game with merely eleven assists on twenty-six made baskets.

Coach Anderson summarized the Tigers' failures on this night. "I think the difference in the game was our inability to make stops, going down the stretch.  And at the same time, make plays on the other end."

Another problem on this night was that the wrong guys spent too much time on the floor, and the ones who were playing well spent too much time on the bench.  Denmon, Dixon, and Bowers only played 19, 11, and 17 minutes respectively, but were on the floor together when Missouri made their run at the end of the first half.  And English and Safford, who each played over 25 minutes............

On a night when the Tigers really needed the 6'6" English to defend the 6'6" Morrison, who was a difficult match-up for Missouri's smaller guards, he couldn't be trusted to be out on the court down the stretch.  Instead of talking about a blue-collar approach in interviews, English needs to bring a tough-defensive mindset out onto the court, and do the dirty work that wins ball games every night.  If you want to be the star, don't just talk about it.  Go out there every night and shut down the other team's best player!
