Tigers Bounce Roos 91-57

The Missouri Tigers overcame a slow start to run away from the Kangaroos by 34

On Wednesday evening at Mizzou Arena, the Missouri Tigers (10-3) defeated the UMKC Kangaroos (7-6) by the score of 91-57.

The Roos led 6-0 early in the game, when Coach Anderson substituted three new guards into the game. Zaire Taylor, Marcus Denmon, and Miguel Paul helped turn up the defensive intensity, and Missouri went on a 12-0 run, before extending the lead to a 12-point halftime advantage.

Afterward, Coach Anderson talked about his team's play.  "Our bench guys came in with about 17 minutes to go.  I wasn't going to look at that for long.  Our bench came in, and settled it down, got us into a rhythm.  That's the second time we came out sluggish like that."

In the second half, the Tigers just wore down the outmanned Kangaroos, and rapidly extended the lead, allowing Coach Anderson to clear his bench early.

Laurence Bowers led the Tigers with 17 points on 5-5 FGs, and grabbed 6 rebounds.  Marcus Denmon chipped in with 14 points.

The real story of the lop-sided game however, was the playing time garnered by little-used freshmen, Jon Underwood and Tyler Stone. Underwood picked up 3 fouls, and committed 5 turnovers, in 7 minutes.  Stone played 9 minutes, and scored 8 points on 4-4 shooting.

Coach Anderson talked about the freshman, Underwood.  "Well, he's a colt, a baby colt.  You could see it.  He caught the ball in the post, and was trying to make some moves.  And, they just bumped him, and kind of knocked him down like a little rag doll.  He's got to get some meat on his bones. Eating, getting in the weight room.  But, you can see the potential there.  He's long and athletic, blocks shots.  Now, he's not afraid!  But, he had some turnovers.  It's funny, because he doesn't turn the ball over in practice.  But, the game takes on a different meaning."

Coach Anderson then talked about Stone.  "He really impressed me!  He's actually one of the few guys out there that squared around and gave us a post presence.  Not necessarily just shooting the basketball.  Rebounding the ball. And you saw some of the skill level.  He made a nice dish to Laurence Bowers for a nice dunk."

Sophomore Steve Moore fouled out after playing 8 minutes.  Coach Anderson talked about getting Moore ready for conference play.  "We're bringing him along.  And, he did some good things tonight.  He gives us a big body out there."

Coach Anderson lamented the 4 turnovers apiece by two of his starters, Kim English and J.T. Tiller.  "Those guys are starters.  They shouldn't have 4 turnovers each............. That's something that's got to be addressed............. We've got to get that maximum effort any time out there on the floor.  It does not matter who we play! That's where you talk about creating those habits in practice.  Needless to say, we'll be working out tomorrow."
