Game Preview: Missouri vs Georgia

The Tigers host the Georgia Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Mizzou arena

The Missouri Tigers (10-3) will host the Georgia Bulldogs (7-4) on Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena (3:00 P.M., MSN).

Georgia brings good size into this contest.  Their top player is sophomore PF Trey Thompkins 6'9" 247 lbs., who leads Georgia in scoring (16.5 pts./game) and rebounding (8.5 reb./game).  Sophomore Travis Leslie 6'4" 202 lbs., is also scoring in double figures (12.5 pts./game) and contributes 5.7 rebounds/game.

It appears that they like to play a halfcourt game, and have registered a solid win over Illinois (70-67) on a "neutral court" in Atlanta.  The Buldogs have fallen to UAB (72-56) and Virginia Tech (74-62) on the road, and to St. John's in Madison Square Garden.  It appears that Georgia primarily plays with 7 guys, but have a couple of freshmen guards who play minor roles off the bench, so they may extend their rotation to include as many as 10 players against Missouri.  Perhaps their game against UAB provides some insight into how Georgia will operate against the Tigers.  In that contest, Georgia utilized 10 players, and outrebounded UAB, but turned the ball over 17 times.

For Missouri, the formula remains the same.  The Tigers must establish the up-tempo pace with which they like to play, by bringing a tough defensive mindset, or hard hat mentality, onto the floor.  "Hanging our hats on our defense," as Coach Anderson likes to say, allows for the Tigers to play their "brand of basketball", and create the "organized chaos" which is so effective for Mizzou.

Once again, MU will be looking for consistent, improved play up front from Justin Safford and Steve Moore.  It will be interesting to see Missouri's starting line-up, as I expect the experimentation with the starting line-up may slow down, and the line-up and rotation will likely begin to take on the appearance of what Coach Anderson will utilize during the early portion of the conference season.

As the conference season approaches, Missouri has 10 players averaging at least 10 minutes/game.  I expect that those 10 will constitute Mizzou's rotation going forward, with 10th man, Steve Moore continuing to play around 10 minutes/game.  The Tigers have 3 guys averaging double figures in scoring, and 7 guys who are averaging at least 7 pts./game, as well as 7 guys who are shooting at least 38% from behind the 3-PT line, and 7 guys with as many or more assists than turnovers (assist-to-turnover ratio >/=
1.00).  As a team, Missouri has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.28.
