Tigers Make It 29 Straight At Home

Missouri starts slow but kicks it into gear to take out Savannah St. 74-45

On Wednesday evening at Mizzou Arena, the Missouri Tigers (12-3) defeated the Savannah State Tigers (5-11) by the final score of 74-45.

Savannah State played brilliantly, controlling the pace of the game into the second half, and hung around with Missouri for about 35 minutes.  2009 NABC and Clair Bee Coach of the Year, Mike Anderson, inserted four guards into the game with about 15 minutes remaining in the second half, including the trio of Marcus Denmon, Mike Dixon, and Miguel Paul.  It was at this point that Missouri was finally able to get the game going at their pace, and then Mizzou pulled away.

Missouri led 28-25 at the half, then held Savannah State to 20 second half points.  Missouri collected 15 steals on the evening, 11 of those after intermission, and turned Savannah State over 25 times.  After a sluggish first half, in which Missouri committed 10 turnovers, they took better care of the ball in the second half, only turning it over 2 times.

Afterwards, Coach Anderson talked about the win.  "I thought it was a tale of two halves.  I thought the intensity was there in the second half, especially.  But, you got to give credit to Savannah State............ They had nothing to lose, and everything to gain.  And, they played like that.  They probably played us as good as anybody has played us in the first half."

Keith Ramsey played magnificently throughout the game, and Laurence Bowers also played very well.  After the game, Bowers talked about how the Tigers are playing.  "Through the first 15 games of the season, I believe we've played decent.   I don't think we've played to the best of our abilities.   I think there's a lot of stuff we need to work on.  Like Coach says, we're still a work in progress."

Bowers continued, talking about conference play.  "It's a lot more physical. The Big 12 is said to be one of the most physical conferences in college basketball.  Everybody's a good team.............. So every day, you've got to come out with your hard hat."

On an evening when Missouri's outside shooting was about as cold as the snowy weather outside, they had 4 players who scored in double figures, and a 5th who scored 9 points.  Three Missouri players each pulled down 6 rebounds on the evening, including Denmon and Ramsey, who seemed to be involved in a lot of what went right for the Missouri Tigers in this game.

Finally, Coach Anderson talked about his senior guard, J.T. Tiller.  "I thought J.T. was everywhere............ I talk about guys being the heart and soul of our basketball team.  He's that guy.  How he goes, we go."
