Game Preview: Missouri vs. Colorado

The Colorado Buffalos come to Mizzou Arena for conference battle against Tigers

On Wednesday evening (6:30 P.M., MSN) at Mizzou Arena, the Missouri Tigers (20-7, 8-4) host the Colorado Buffaloes (12-14, 3-9) in league play.

Colorado comes into this contest following a 94-74 setback at #1 Kansas on Saturday.  The Buffaloes are led in scoring by 6'5" junior guard Cory Higgins with 17.9 points/game, and 6'6" freshman guard Alec Burks with 16.8 points/game.  Burks is shooting a healthy 52.2% FG%, and is making 79% of his FTAs, and he leads the Buffs in rebounding with 4.8 rebounds/game.  Higgins also leads CU with 50 steals on the season.

During league play, Colorado has shot the ball pretty well, but they are coming up short in the battle of possessions, as the Buffs are being outrebounded by 6 rebounds/game in conference, and are losing the turnover battle at -2.3 turnovers/game.

Of course, this is a game in which the Tigers will be focused on playing well, and playing the right way, more than being focused on what Colorado will do.  Having played CU in Boulder earlier, the Tigers are familiar with Burks and Higgins, and should know what they need to do to come away with the win over the Buffaloes.  The Tigers should be able to apply the high-intensity defensive pressure that will speed up the pace of the game to their liking.  Against Colorado, Missouri will be able to attack the basket with impunity.  The Tigers should again utilize the "gang rebounding" approach that has been effective for Missouri of late, and should be able to turn the Buffaloes over with frequency.

During Big 12 Conference play, four Missouri players are averaging double figures in scoring (English, Denmon, Bowers, and Safford), and a fifth (Taylor), is averaging 9.7 points/game.  The Tigers are being outrebounded in league play by a 3.9 rebound/game margin, but offset that possession deficit by registering a +5.3 turnover margin.  Misssouri is assisting on 52% of their FGs in conference play.

Laurence Bowers is shooting 56% from the field, and Marcus Denmon is hitting 46% of his 3-PT FGAs during league play.
