Game Preview: Missouri vs. Iowa St.

The Missouri Tigers wrap up their conference road games with a trip to Iowa State

On Tuesday evening (7:00 P.M., MSN), the Missouri Tigers (21-8, 9-5) travel to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones (14-15, 3-11) in conference action.

Missouri Coach Mike Anderson talked about playing at Iowa State on Tuesday.   "Well, the games get bigger.  They get bigger, and they get magnified.  It's an opportunity for us to go, and hopefully steal one."

Iowa State comes into this game following a 75-72 loss at Colorado.  The Cyclones are led by a pair of forwards with consensus NBA potential.  Junior Craig Brackins scores 16.6 points/game, and grabs 8.4 rebounds/game, and senior Marquis Gilstrap contributes 14.9 points/game, and pulls down 9.1 rebounds/game.  Junior guard Diante Garrett averages 5.0 assists/game.

The Cyclones put a good starting five on the floor, but run into trouble when they have to go to their bench.  Iowa State has a big advantage in the Gilstrap-Kim English match-up.  In Columbia, English got into early foul trouble, giving up the baseline to Gilstrap early and often before spending much of the first half on the bench.  Gilstrap got off early, and finished with 18 points, and 9 rebounds.  Brackins posted a double-double in Columbia with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

But, Missouri played the game at their own pace, and the Tigers' depth was too much for the Cyclones.  Laurence Bowers posted his own double-double, off the bench against the Cyclones in Columbia, with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Justin Safford just missed a double-double, with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Coach Anderson talked about the evolution of this year's team.  "As we've gotten into conference play, I think they've gotten the feel for the urgency, the competitiveness, and just what it takes to win on the road.  More than anything else, I think the leadership has really started to emerge on the team.  You're seeing the imprint of J.T. Tiller, Zaire Taylor, and Keith Ramsey on this team."

If Misouri is going to "steal" this one, they'll need to play together, and play with the same defensive intensity that they did on Saturday.  Iowa State will be much more formidable at home than they were in Columbia.  Missouri must establish the up-tempo pace with which they are more effective, and that will force the Cyclones to utilize their bench.  The Tigers need to get back to sharing the basketball, and attacking the glass, and playing inside out.
