Zach Spiker's departure from West Point added a plot twist to the Patriot League's basketball landscape. One of the products of that plot twist is that it redrew the lines in the conference in terms of coaching seniority. Believe it or not, but only two coaches in the league have forged longer tenures than the one owned by Navy's Ed DeChellis.

Navy will host the third installment of the Veterans Classic on November 11, 2016 in Annapolis after a CBS Sports announcement last week. This tournament has given the Mids great exposure on the opening weekend of the college basketball season and 2016 is set to be no different with Ed DeChellis’ squad taking on perennial Big Ten power Ohio State.

The 2015-16 Navy men’s basketball season ended at the hands of a red hot Lehigh Mountain Hawks squad on Thursday night. The game was a strange and frustrating one for the Mids who erased a 19-point deficit before running out of steam and going down 65-63. Lehigh remain one of the hottest teams in the entire country with their 10 game win streak being the longest the school has seen since the 1925-26 season.

The Mids reward for a first round Patriot League Tournament victory over Lafayette is a trip to Bethlehem, PA, to take on the white hot Lehigh Mountain Hawks. Lehigh, the league’s second seed, are riding a nine game winning streak that makes them the hottest team in Patriot League and one of the hottest in the country. The nine game streak is currently the third longest in the nation and the Mids will have to employ all their road game skills from this season to take down the Mountain Hawks on t

The Mids were able to take care of Lafayette on Tuesday night 78-70 at Alumni Hall. The result means that seventh seeded Navy will now play Lehigh, the second seed, on Thursday night in the Patriot League quarterfinals on the road in Bethlehem, PA. There is a look back at what the Mids did right to beat the Leopards:

Thanks to a pretty miserable run to end the season Navy will enter the Patriot League Tournament as the seventh seed. That means that on Tuesday night the Mids will host tenth seeded Lafayette at Alumni Hall. While Navy finished regular season play with a 77-73 loss to Bucknell to send the Mids to 9-9 in conference, the Leopards never really got their season going, slumping to 3-15 in the Patriot League. Ironically the Mids poor end to the season could help as Navy has proven to be a better road

Navy lost an absolute heartbreaker on Saturday as Army made one play more than the Mids to snap Navy’s five game win streak in the series. Navy was ahead for the entire second half until Kyle Wilson tied the game on a three pointer with just eight seconds left in regulation. Navy was an agent of its own demise as the Mids took hold of the game by pushing the basketball up the floor on fast breaks and getting easy baskets, before seemingly settling for a more mundane, half-court game after establ

With just three games left in the regular season Navy are in an interesting spot in the Patriot League. The Mids currently sit fourth in the league and are two games behind first placed Bucknell and one game behind Boston and Lehigh who are tied for second place. The only one of the teams above them that Navy has still to play is Bucknell at home on the last day of the season. The Mids form as of late has been spotty at best. Navy is 3-4 over its last seven games and really needs a run to close

Navy picked up a crucial come from behind victory on Saturday as they shut down Lafayette in the second half and escaped Easton, Pa. with the win. Navy was down by as many as eight in the second half, but the Mids showed spirit and energy as the game wore on to grind their way back into it and tied the game at 57 with just under five minutes to go. Navy was almost perfect (7-of-8) from the line with the game on the line to close things out without too much drama.

The Navy men’s basketball team is off on its travels again on Saturday afternoon, but by now the MIds know they have nothing to fear when playing on someone else’s court. Navy will be trying for its eleventh road win of the season at Lafayette and is 10-2 (a school record for road wins in a season) in true road games this year. The Mids handled the Leopards comfortably in an 87-61 beat down in mid-January and will be looking for another win to keep the pressure on Bucknell at the head of the Pat

Navy completed its second straight season sweep of Loyola with a dominant 71-51 victory on Wednesday night. The win was the Mids tenth on the road this year, taking Navy to 10-2 on its travels and already setting a program record for most road wins in a season. Coming into this contest the Mids had been 1-4 over their last five games in a slump that was threatening to ruin a promising season. With their backs against the wall however Navy played one of its most complete games all year to put thi

The Mids go in search of their tenth road win of the season on Wednesday night as they travel to Baltimore to take on Loyola. A win would give Navy a second straight season sweep of the Greyhounds, but more importantly it would keep Navy in contention for the second seed in the Patriot League Tournament behind Bucknell. As part of a four way tie for that second sport currently the Mids know they may have to win out from this point onward to grab the seeding advantage.

The snow induced scheduling nightmare of three games in three states in five days caught up with the Mids on Wednesday was they fell 83-72 to Boston University at home. Navy was looking to back up its Star Game victory over Army, but was unable to slow down a hot shooting Terriers team that was only the third team, and the second in regulation, to put more than 80 points in the Mids this season.

Navy basketball is almost done with the weather induced craziness that was the end of January and the beginning of February. The Mids got a big boost, and snapped their two game slide, by beating Army in the rearranged game from late January in West Point 64-50 on Monday night. It was once again a game where the defense was key for Navy as they held Army to a season low 50 points despite the Black Knights getting back their two injured stars. Next up is a home date with Boston University on Wedn

The Mids dropped their second game in a row on Saturday, a worry trend given that Navy is in the middle of a streak of four games in just eight days. After an awful loss against American, Navy had Holy Cross against the ropes at the Hart Center before the Mids awful run in that particular building continued with an overtime defeat. The loss was the Mids 17th in 18 attempts at the Crusaders home venue and means that work must be done quickly if Navy is to have any shot at a regular season patriot

Navy dropped by far its worst game of the season on Wednesday night when the Mids (15-6, 6-2 Patriot League) were somehow upended by American (4-15, 2-6 PL). The loss snapped a six game winning streak for the Mids and dropped Navy out of a tie for first place in the league standings after Bucknell won on the same evening. American ranked 345th out of 346 teams in Division I in points per game, but Navy simply looked past a bad opponent and paid the price. The Mids must now regroup and push on as

The Army-Navy football game has been a mainstay in part because of its neutral and often high end location and on Saturday the basketball game between the two schools follows suit. Army will host Navy at Madison Square Garden in New York, the most famous arena in sports. This will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools at this most prestigious of venues and this seems to be a fitting season for the game to take place with both Army and Navy being contenders for the Patriot League cr

Navy (15-5, 6-1 Patriot League) won its sixth straight game on Wednesday night by upending Lehigh 69-64 is Bethlehem, Penn. The win means Navy has its best 20-game start to a season since 2000 and the 6-1 Patriot League record is the team's best run out of the gate in conference play since 2001. The win also snapped an 11-game losing streak to Lehigh and kept Navy tied for first in the Patriot League with Bucknell. Navy will now look to use this narrow win as a boost before its first meeting of

Navy (14-5, 5-1 Patriot League) moved into a tie for first place in the conference with a dominating 87-61 victory over Lafayette on Saturday evening. The win was the Mids fifth straight conference victory after losing the league opener at Bucknell and that five game win streak is the best for Navy in league play since 2008. The 5-1 Patriot League start is also the best for the team in league play for 15 years. Even more encouragingly the win was the Mids best all-around performance of the year

Navy left it late, but a big run at the end of the game allowed the Mids to rally back against Loyola and beat the Greyhounds 60-52 on Wednesday night. The win takes Navy to second in the Patriot League at 4-1, but it also, somewhat astonishingly, means that the 13-5 Mids have already equaled their win total from last season. Navy will next be looking to add to that win total on Saturday with a home game against Lafayette.

Welcome to the first Navy men’s basketball three keys of the 2015-16 season. This is an article series that has been running for the football program on this site for a few years now, but with the basketball team having a good season to date it seemed like the perfect time to focus the idea on hoops as well.

The Navy men’s basketball team moved to 11-5 on the season (2-1 in Patriot League play) with a big win over Boston University on Wednesday night. The 83-67 win means that this is now the Mids best start to a season since opening 11-4 in the 2008-09 season.
