Report Card: Navy vs. Georgia Southern

In a hard hitting defensive battle, Navy avoided a potentially embarrassing loss to FBS opponent Georgia Southern in grinding out a 13-7 win. It was a game eerily reminiscence of the recent battles against Air Force.

PASSING OFFENSE
C+
Ricky Dobbs completed 5 of 8 attempts for 84 yards. Dobbs 12 yard pass to Aaron Santiago moved the ball inside the 10 to set up Navy's only touchdown of the day. All except one of Dobbs completed passes were short as Navy struggled in its pass protection allowing two sacks. On one sack Ricky's decision making was poor. He failed to throw the ball away on a roll out outside the pocket allowing himself to be sacked by Dion DuBose. The biggest play was the third and 18 completion for 44 yards to Greg Jones that allowed the Mids to run out the clock. It was a tremendous catch and showed terrific concentration by Jones who out muscled the Eagle safety A.J. McCray for the ball.
RUSHING OFFENSE
D
Maybe it was the short week. Maybe it was because they were missing right tackle Matt Malloy. It's probably just because of Georgia Southern's defensive line. After rushing for 429 yards against Maryland the Mids ran for just 109 yards. It was Navy 's most anemic rushing output since 2002. Georgia Southern's sophomore nose tackle Brent Russell was a monster in middle and dominated center Brady DeMell and the Mids. Quarterback Ricky Dobbs took a beating as he rushed for only 64 yards on 25 carries. Dobbs scored the only touchdown of the game. Vince Murray was the only effective ball carrier running for 50 yards on 9 carries. Running room and blocking on the perimeter was virtually nonexistent the entire contest.
PASSING DEFENSE
A
The Mids allowed Georgia Tech transfer Jaybo Shaw to complete just 4 of 9 passes for 36 yards. Shaw produced the only Eagle touchdown on a 17 yard pass to JJ Wilcox. Shaw was sacked three times as Georgia Southern's offensive line was overwhelmed by Navy. Shane Bothel had a sack and forced a fumble that set up a field goal. Aaron McCauley showed great speed off the end from his outside linebacker spot in recording a sack to end the Eagles last offensive threat.
RUSHING DEFENSE
A+
Navy dominated Georgia Southern upfront at the point of attack. Jabaree Tuani had nine tackles and Shane Bothel seven tackles one sack and forced a fumble; both were unblockable. Navy took away the fullback all day. Much better day of tackling by linebackers than against Maryland. Tyler Simmons had seven tackles while Max Blue had six. Team captain Wyatt Middleton had terrific tackle making six tackles including a tremendous tackle in alley.

COACHING

Ken Niumatalolo used the Air Force game template as he let his defense win the game. It was a real battle. Chalk it up as a survive and advance game as both teams battled between the tackles. Great job by defensive coordinator Buddy Green. The defense flew around and hammered Georgia Southern all afternoon.
