Navy kicked off the 2011 season with a 40-17 win over Delaware in Annapolis. Each week GoMids.com recognizes a top offensive player, defensive player, special teams player, and an unsung hero. Look inside to find out which players GoMids.com honors this week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Proctor, a senior from Big Bear City, CA, showed the 2011 Navy
offense is in good hands as he helped lead the Mids to 437 yards of total offense. Proctor himself carried 22 times for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 75-yard dash on the third play of the game. Proctor also completed four of 7 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mitchell, a senior defensive back from Hoover, AL, had six tackles, broke up two passes, and also intercepted a Blue Hen pass, returning it 26 yards to set up the final Navy touchdown. Mitchell's play helped the Navy defense limit Delaware to only 143 yards passing on 29 attempts.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Teague, a senior from Hickory, NC, gave Navy some much needed momentum heading to halftime when he nailed a school record 54-yard field goal. Teague was two for two on field goals as he also connected from 36 yards. Teague's kickoffs also helped pin the Blue Hens deep, as he averaged 65 yards on his 8 kicks, including two touchbacks, resulting in an average Delaware starting field position of their own 21 yard line.
UNSUNG HERO OF THE WEEK
Beltran, a plebe from Humble, TX, punted only once, nailing a 47-yarder. But he's being recognized as the Unsung Hero due to his job as the holder on place kicks. Holder was a position that was very unsettled throughout preseason camp, and Beltran was eventually given the job. He got every snap down, including one that led to a school record field goal.
