GoMids.com Players of the Week

Navy ran their 2011 season record to 2-0 with a 40-14 win over Western Kentucky in a game held September 10th in Bowling Green, KY. Each week GoMids.com recognizes a top offensive player, defensive player, special teams player, and an unsung hero. Look inside to find out which players GoMids.com honors this week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SB John Howell

Howell, a junior from Hatfield, PA, turned three carries into 113 yards and two near carbon-copy touchdown runs of over 50 yards. Howell took a pitch from QB Kriss Proctor 50 yards to the end zone on an option to the right during Navy's first offensive series, and then did the same thing on the 2nd drive of the third quarter, this time running 57 yards to paydirt.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LB Matt Warrick

When you get selected as the Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Defensive Player Of The Week, as Warrick was for his performance against WKU, you pretty much earn the GoMids Defensive Player of the Week by default. Warrick, a junior from Chesterfield, MO, recorded a team-high 12 tackles, adding a fumble recovery and pass break-up. Warrick helped the Midshipmen hold the Hilltoppers to only 277 yards in total offense.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KR Marcus Thomas

Thomas, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, LA, had three kickoff returns totalling 65 yards. He consistently put Navy in average starting field position of their own 37 yard line. This field position helped lead to two Navy touchdown drives.

UNSUNG HERO OF THE WEEK

DB Tra'ves Bush

Bush, a junior defensive back from Johnston, SC, had six tackles on the day, but more importantly he returned his second career interception 49 yards for a touchdown to essentially put the game on ice for Navy. It was Bush's first career touchdown and the first interception returned for a touchdown by a Navy player since Ram Vela returned an interception 68 yards for a TD against Army on Dec. 6, 2008.
